Z&B Fitness is a boutique fitness studio based in Shanghai, offering the best and most up-to-date group and private classes. We were commissioned to update their existing studio located inside the Golden Eagle shopping mall in downtown Shanghai.

The client required us to renovate three rooms for different kinds of fitness classes, including the corridor and reception area.

The three classrooms—“Boxing Room,” “Flow Room,” and “Dancing Room”—are housed within a black volume visible from the large corridors leading to the reception. The black volume opens up in the middle to the Boxing Room, which is separated from the corridor by the ring and characterized by typical circular lights.

The concept for the “Flow Room” was inspired by the fitness program’s mantra of “be strong, elegant, and balanced.” The result is a harmonious space dominated by the contrast between greige and black surfaces and hard and soft materials. The use of mirrors and glass surfaces amplifies the perception of space and visually connects with the adjacent rooms for boxing and modern dance.

The “Dancing Room” is a dark space dominated by a bright grid that is reflected and multiplied in the surrounding mirrors and windows.
