ZO Jazz Stage is more than a concert venue; it is a cultural living room for Amsterdam Southeast with an international appeal. Located within the iconic Zandkasteel, the project transforms a former office environment into a dynamic destination for music, social interaction, talent development, and cultural exchange. The interior supports an ambition that extends beyond presenting concerts: it facilitates the entire creative process of musical artists, from rehearsals and education to professional stage production.
The design translates this ambition into a clear and welcoming spatial experience, emphasizing flexibility, accessibility, and connection. Warm materials and open sightlines create an inviting atmosphere, while the acoustic and spatial qualities provide a professional environment in which artists can develop and thrive.
The multifunctional spaces create an inviting setting for a wide range of activities, from jazz concerts and spoken-word performances to workshops, educational programs, and community events. The spaces are designed to accommodate both intimate gatherings and larger cultural productions.
Artists, students, local residents, and visitors move through the same environment and become part of a single cultural ecosystem. As a result, the traditional boundary between stage and audience is blurred, creating an open and accessible cultural infrastructure.
ZO Jazz Stage contributes to the cultural identity of Amsterdam Southeast and provides a sustainable platform for both local talent and international artists. In collaboration with Brewery ’t IJ, the team at Ruwe Bolster Art Lights & Furniture gave unplayable musical instruments from local artists a second life as unique lighting objects. These artistic creations add character, identity, and a personal connection to the neighborhood, enriching the interior with a strong sense of place and community.
