Firm architects transforms unusable attic space into minimal loft

Firm architects transforms a previously unsuitable attic space in Amsterdam into a stylish loft. A few years before, a previous owner raised the roof some fifty centimeters. After that the space was sold as a renovation project. Studio de Nooyer The client desired an "honest, masculine and architectural space" with as much usable area as possible. Firm architects interprets this into the concept of ‘a new elevation on an old basis.’  Studio de Nooyer The entire space exhibits a cut at a height of 95 centimeters above the floor. The height has both a practical and a more poetic reason. On the one hand, it is the height of kitchen cabinets and handrails, and on the other hand, it is the central point of the male b... Mais

COLLIDER is a coworking space, event-hall and bar located on the territory of the former silkworm factory of the 19th century in the center of Moscow. The seating area in the shade of artificial trees is the first thing that catches the eye upon entering the bar. This is the perfect place to reboot during your working day. You can chat with friends and colleagues or just smoke a hookah, stretching out in a relaxed position on the sofa. In this area, we used an interesting technique - parquet boards were installed in a self-leveling concrete floor. Caption Caption The space uses many round shapes - a reference to the idea of a collider - neon tube lights, circular decorative panels, gold brass tube lights. Server room is decorat... Mais

Austin City Loft

Transitioning to this simple space was seen as an opportunity for the owners to winnow possessions and highlight their art and book collections. A 21-foot-tall egg-crate wall of books with a catwalk at mid-height defines the dramatic space. True to loft living, pipes and ducts are exposed and rooms open to each other to capture light and views. The occasional need for privacy is met by large sliding panels of pale green glass and a pair of floating colored walls. The new kitchen and bath take materials cues from the glass doors and double-height windows bringing the detailing into harmony throughout. Mais

Industrial Russian tower retrofitted with a loft-style contemporary workspace

Within a 19th century industrial building in St Petersburg, Art Gluck has introduced a modern office that meets the functional requirements of a contemporary building whilst maintaining the history of an industrial artifact.   Dmitry Tsyrencshikov The existing tower has a footprint of 10 square meters and a height of approximately 8 meters, allowing for a three-level space that accommodates an entry lobby (with wardrobe and bathroom), office space on the second floor and a recreation area with a kitchen and small library on the third level. The three levels are linked with a light metal staircase.  Dmitry Tsyrencshikov A particular challenge into the retrofit was creating even daylight throughout the building. The seco... Mais

Loft extension Prinz-Eugen-Straße

Bold developers are rewarded with a unique view of the Belvedere. The multi-party building from the Wilhelminian period had not only become outdated; the excellent location also offered a good reason for urban consolidation by converting the loft and at the same time renovating the entire building.   A total of four apartments were created. Two spacious maisonette apartments with several outdoor areas, as well as two newly designed apartments on the ground floor with garden areas to the inner courtyard. There is no sign of the extra floor from the street. However, once you are up there it is hard to imagine that before the elaborate measures, which took one-and-a-half to complete, the space was just a bare wooden attic.   Mate... Mais

Loft Apartment

The oldest building on the downtown pedestrian mall in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, contains this minimal and modern renovation. The c.1843 three-story structure was badly in need of refurbishment — portions of the framing, roof, insulation, windows, mechanical systems, electrical and plumbing were all replaced and renewed so this building is set for service for another century or more.   What was dark commercial space with claustrophobic offices and an enclosed storage attic is now transformed into a single spacious open floor apartment with a sleeping loft. Transparency from front to back is a key design intent, establishing visual access to the street trees in front and sunlight in the back. Multiple modes of direct and i... Mais

Batel Loft

The Loft surge of a young entrepreneur's desire to have a haven for his hectic life of meetings. The concept of the project is clear, a compact apartment without excesses, but with a unique, minimalist architecture in its pure form and with pieces of Brazilian design. Wood, concrete and black were the three main elements chosen by the architect to symbolize the urban, contemporary and minimalist life of the single dweller.   What were the solutions?Right at the entrance a Hall, which in the vision of the architect, becomes an architectural promenade for the event itself, a tunnel of natural wood blade freijó, hidden in it the toilet by a door panel. After the tunnel, a double right-foot wall clad a ripped panel of the same woo... Mais

Loft 32 Zlín

The loft is situated on the 8th floor of a former Baťa shoe factory building in Zlín, overlooking the green heart of the town. Its design aims to integrate the town’s image into the space of the apartment. The design approach contradicts the usual loft-making procedure, which emphasizes industrial materials in the interior, by transforming the space into an abstract composition with the industrial aspect presented through the view of the surrounding area, framed by the Zlín skyscraper and the valley. The inner space features the gradual opening of the individual epicentres of the apartment. Its open space allows the separation of the social and private parts by using multi-level differentiation, rather than sharp divides. The interior is de... Mais

From the Roof Down

All right, all right! Maybe not exactly from the roof, but we did start the design of this home right beneath it at the top floor. It wasn´t out of a whim, however. Here, at this level, the client wanted to concentrate all comfort features and special amenities of their new home within a generously sized - double height, mixed use area to be devoted to entertainment, relaxation, play, reading, painting, music, guitar playing and guests hosting. Let’s climb the stairs and take a look in to this redefined super-attic: a former storage room turned into family-hub. The new heart and centre of the home relocated at new (greater) heights!   Material Used : Furniture: Guest Bedroom: Geometric Pattern cushion cover 45X... Mais

School House

For a Cooperative Housing Community, eklund_terbeek has transformed an early 20th century school building into six  apartments. The building is part of an ensemble of three former schools, situated within a building block in Rotterdam West. Eklund_terbeek architects were responsible for the renovation and transformation of the building as a whole and designed one apartment in detail.   The apartment consists of two former classrooms and the adjacent hallway zone. Starting point for the design was to make optimal use of the inherent qualities; the monumental space, the tall windows and original details. The wall between the two classrooms is removed to create a large loft-like living space. The ceiling height of nearly five meter... Mais

Broadway project

Designed by celebrated firm, Stephen Vitalich Architects, this Broadway project called for four loft style single family residences developed as a small lot subdivision. Steven used Western’s Series 600 Multi-Slide doors to make each residence feel larger.Indoor/outdoor living that included a roof deck was greatly encouraged by doors that slide and stack to the side to open up multiple rooms to enjoy the outdoors. When we look at his project, we like to call it “urban space exploration”. What phenomenal work. Mais
