Sustainability Report
Embodied carbon
Carbon Negative
The ACCIONA Energía Pavilion achieves carbon negativity through a combination of sustainable materials, component reuse, and renewable energy generation.
- Carbon-Negative footprint:
- The pavilion's overall carbon footprint is significantly lower—up to 50 times less—than a comparable structure built with conventional materials like steel, aluminum, and plastics.
- Sustainable materials:
- The primary structure utilizes timber sourced from sustainably managed forests, providing natural carbon sequestration.
- Recycled textiles are incorporated into the design.
- Glue-laminated timber from Madergia was used to greatly reduce the carbon footprint, and provide a warm and functional design.
- 50% of the wood used was repurposed from a previous event, promoting circularity.
- Reused components:
- Repurposed wind turbine blades are integrated into the facade ventilation system.
- Renewable energy:
- A 12 kW solar installation on the roof generates renewable energy.
- Passive cooling:
- The pavilion's design leverages natural airflow from the sea, minimizing the need for energy-intensive cooling.
- Modular design:
- The modular design facilitates reuse at future events.
Operational Emissions / Energy
Low Carbon
- Material carbon sequestration:
- Timber used captured approximately 70 tons of CO2 during its growth and storage.
- Recycled wind turbine blades each avoided 2,045 tons of CO2 emissions during their lifetime.
- Construction emissions:
- The pavilion's construction, including material transportation, emitted less than 25 tons of CO2.
- Material choice
- Glue-laminated timber from Madergia significantly reduces the carbon footprint and adds warmth and functionality.
- 50% of the wood used was reused from previous events, promoting circularity.
- The use of these materials resulted in the pavilion being carbon negative.
- Building a similar structure with aluminum, non-recycled textile and plastic would generate around 1.300 tons of CO2.
- Building it with steel, non-recycled textile and plastic would generate around 630 tons of CO2.

Disassemblable Elements for Circular Economy
The pavilion brings together movement, circularity and positive impact to a unique and sustainable design that has specific features, for example, the wooden poles on the roof simulate anemometers that estimate wind speed and direction. Its ecological design principles, use of biological materials, and focus on circularity reflect a vision for the future of architecture—one where buildings are not just structures but responsible actors in the climate challenge. The pavilion’s modularity ensures that it can be reused in future events, furthering Acciona’s goal of sustainable urban development.
