Sustainability Report
Embodied carbon
Sustainable timber as a core material:
The project prominently features sustainably sourced Finnish spruce, notably in the "Eggshell Dome," which utilizes the material-efficient Zollinger timber structure. 90% of all interventions, including domes, sculptures, seating, and planters, are constructed from timber, emphasizing its renewable nature and ease of disassembly for recycling. Thermal wood further enhances durability in outdoor elements like bench covers and terrace paving.
Creative waste reduction through repurposing:
Nota Architects demonstrates a commitment to reducing waste by creatively repurposing MEP components, such as electrical boxes, into functional signage.
Enhancing community through "Placemaking":
The "Placemaking" philosophy guides the project, aiming to foster community connection and optimize space utilization. This approach has the potential to indirectly reduce energy consumption by creating more efficient and engaging spaces.
Afterlife
This project embraced an "Adhocism" approach, prioritizing the reuse and repurposing of existing elements. By incorporating innovative 'add-on' features, these spaces were transformed into enjoyable and functional places. For instance, existing terrace paths and pavings were largely retained, and plants, including all trees, were re-planted according to the new landscape design, MEP facilities were creatively repurposed: electrical boxes were transformed into poster boards or dog walking signage, elevator lobbies were refurbished with carpets and signage boards, using existing wall tiles as background, minimizing demolition and waste.
The Eggshell Dome exemplifies efficient spatial utilization through curved forms, creating a shelter with a large open interior. By transitioning to Zollinger structures with linear mortise and tenon joints, timber waste was significantly reduced compared to the processing of curved components. Comprising over 700 CNC-processed components, the dome was meticulously spliced and assembled on-site, showcasing a high degree of precision and craftsmanship.
