Embodied carbon

Low Carbon

Poppies is a residential building constructed primarily using the SUPERWOOD modular building system, based on prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) modules. The use of prefabrication enables a high proportion of biogenic materials within the building structure and reduces on-site construction activities.

Material use and construction stored carbon

  • The project comprises 103 prefabricated three-dimensional CLT modules, with individual unit sizes ranging from from approximately 40 to 54 square metres. Approximately 80 percent of the materials used in the project are reported as recycled or renewable, including photovoltaic components.
  • A Construction Stored Carbon (CSC) calculation has been carried out using Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for the biogenic materials used in the project. The calculation includes CLT, spruce (Picea spp.), timber framing elements, and hardwood components, with an assumed material lifespan of 75 years.
  • Based on this calculation, the total Construction Stored Carbon is reported as 1,907.13 tonnes of CO2e. The Net Carbon Removal Benefit of the project is calculated as 1,826 tonnes of CO2e.
  • Normalised by gross floor area, this equates to 224.2 kilograms of CO2e per square metre. The gross floor area used in the calculation is 8,142 square metres.

Operational Emissions / Energy

Efficient

The building incorporates on-site renewable energy systems, including photovoltaic panels and a ground-source thermal energy system. According to project data, the building achieves an EPC of –0.34.

Landscape and water management

The project incorporates green roof areas and on-site water retention measures for stormwater management.

Afterlife

A key premise of the Superwood system is long-term adaptability. Standardised modules can be reconfigured over time through horizontal or vertical connections. This allows dwellings to be combined or expanded by modifying internal walls or introducing new openings, without altering the primary structural logic.

The modular arrangement supports future conversion scenarios — this approach is intended to extend the functional lifespan of MaMa One: Poppies by enabling adjustment rather than replacement.
