SUPERWOOD is a modular timber housing system developed by Superlofts as a practical response to the housing crisis. The system enables developers and housing corporations to deliver high-quality, affordable housing by reducing design and construction time from an average of seven years to around two years.
The system combines a concrete structural frame by Superlofts at the lower levels with prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) Superwood units above. Modules measuring four metres by 12.8 metres, and up to fifteen metres in length, are fully prefabricated off site in CLT. Units can be adapted and combined into larger apartments using infill metal stud walls, with building components designed to be demountable and adaptable over time.
Superwood’s integrated supply chain extends from certified European timber through to finished modules ready for on-site assembly, enabling buildings of up to around ten storeys without the need for additional external stability elements.
The Superwood prefabricated building system is based on an integrated, cost-effective, and flexible supply chain. Partners include Marc Koehler Associates, VRI, DGMR, and Nieman, with construction partners including Van Bekkumand Derix.
