CO2 neutral Lidl supermarket

Lidl Zero Almere is entirely made of sustainable and circular materials. So is the entire facade of this supermarket! It’s is made of our charred product Marugame. The vertical Marugame boards give the building a silvery glow when the sun shines and at the same time the façade gets a characteristic look because of the texture of the charred layer.  Anahí Clemens Sustainability is so important to us, so it is fantastic to be part of the first energy and CO2 neutral supermarket ”Lidl Zero Almere”! Hempcrete House

On the edge of the Danube River in the town of Szentendre, Hungary, Projectroom—the Hungarian architecture collaboration led by married architects Veronika Juhász and Gábor Fábián—has completed an ecoconscious family home that embodies a philosophy of temperance and sustainability rather than material abundance. As the pair explain: “Our current way of life is not sustainable. A paradigm shift is necessary.” The home, which they designed and built for themselves, is constructed from hempcrete, lime plaster, wood and locally sourced materials. With a total gross floor area of approximately 105 square meters and a minimal budget, the home emphasises proportion and intentional living, not si... More

Modern biophilic country house

A modern biophilic country house that harmoniously blends nature, is designed to offer its residents a deep sense of well-being and connection with the environment. The house was designed by Steven van Leeuwen of ORGA architect and landscape designer Nico Wissing in such a way that natural materials and organic forms can be seen everywhere, both inside and outside. Wood is one of these natural materials. Sustainable Marugame boards from Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban are used to cover the walls at the back side of the house and used as elegant elements in the design. The refined scale structure and silvery glow match beautifully with the Fraké wood façade parts, terraces, balustrades and the undersides of roofs. Photos commissio... More

De Zenne

The new primary school "de Zennestraal" and 15 passive housing units of the Brussels Ground Government were inaugurated on the Zennestraat in the presence of local residents, pupils, teachers and representatives from various political levels. The school and housing complex was designed by BOB361, an architecture firm located a stone's throw from the site. The main challenge of the project was to fit a comprehensive programme of a full primary school and new rental housing into a limited site. The result is a combination of contemporary architecture, active pedagogy and sustainability. Liminal House

The clients came to us at a pivotal stage in their lives as soon-to-be empty nesters. The evolving needs of a family became the impetus for how we imagined a house that could embody the state of transition at a conceptual and experiential level. We chose the word liminal to encapsulate ideas that have informed the design process: namely the feeling of inhabiting a transitory place; orchestrating movement through space; and dwelling in the moments between from and to...  Hufton + Crow Caption Caption Hufton + Crow The project site straddles the interstice between a suburban residential neighbourhood and West Vancouver’s natural stony seashore. Veldhuis

Located in North Brabant in the southern Netherlands, along a historic road lined with old farms, the Veldhuis (Field house) is conceived as a contemporary home rooted in tradition. Designed by LMNL office [for architecture and landscape], a Dutch studio specialising in architecture using natural and alternative building materials, Veldhuis draws on the archetypal Dutch barn typology: the design reinterprets familiar forms and materials — brick walls and a thatched roof — to meet the needs of modern family life. Loes van Duijvendijk The project reflects LMNL’s ongoing pursuit of low-carbon, bio-based construction methods that promote comfort through material performance rather than technology. Light Atelier

Marugame

This beautiful, charred wood has a characteristic and equally divided pattern. The silvery glow of the charred layer has a different look depending on the angle of the sunlight. The hard charred layer makes Marugame ideal as a sustainable cladding for roofs and facades. Marugame is also very suitable as an attractive eye- catcher in a special interior.   The wood used for Marugame is Accoya® of the Pinus Radiata tree, a fast-growing pine species. The wood is modified through a non-toxic acetylation process. Accoya® is labelled with durability class 1 and other quality certifications (i.a. KOMO, RAL, BBA, WDMA), and a cradle-to- cradle gold certification. The wood has a lifespan of at least 50 years above ground, and 25 years... More
