Liminal House

The clients came to us at a pivotal stage in their lives as soon-to-be empty nesters. The evolving needs of a family became the impetus for how we imagined a house that could embody the state of transition at a conceptual and experiential level. We chose the word liminal to encapsulate ideas that have informed the design process: namely the feeling of inhabiting a transitory place; orchestrating movement through space; and dwelling in the moments between from and to...  Hufton + Crow Caption Caption Hufton + Crow The project site straddles the interstice between a suburban residential neighbourhood and West Vancouver’s natural stony seashore. Positioned on an expanded border between land and sea, the building... More

Veldhuis

Located on a historic road lined by old farms the Veldhuis seeks to be a contextually relevant modern home with traditional references. The typical Dutch barn typology, brick walls with a thatch roof, is modified to fit the needs of the family.  LMNL office The shape of the Veldhuis is an archetypal Dutch farmhouse, of which the height and width is lessened at the rear, allowing three stories in the front part of the house (bedrooms, study and attic) and one in the rear (living and dining).  The center of the house is made up of the kitchen, wet room, and garage. In order to bring more light into the middle of the living spaces the roof is cut and shifted outwards. The kitchen is pulled out into the garden, splitting the wra... More

Light Atelier

More

Mitoyo

Mitoyo is produced by Accoya and made from Radiata Pine, which is a fast-growing pine species.   Mitoyo has a distinctive, even pattern in the carbon layer, interspersed with small knots and bristles, which gives it a lively appearance. The silver sheen of the carbon layer gives Mitoyo a different appearance depending on the angle of the light. The hard carbon layer makes Mitoyo ideal as a durable finish for a façade or roof.   In addition to the carbon-only version, we can also supply Mitoyo that has undergone a Bito White fixation, which is a colourless water-based resin. This fixation will tone down the outer surface, make it slightly tougher and prevent the carbon from staining. This makes the fixated Mitoyo product... More

Seaview House

The Seaview House is located in the southern coast of County Wexford in Ireland, 700 meters from the sea coast and 4 km of the fishing village of Kilmore Quay. Isabel Barros Architects The brief for this project asked to convert the existing building into a bright contemporary/flamant style seaside bungalow. The existing bungalow was built in the mid-seventies. The layout was not functional and neglected the solar orientation and the fantastic sea views. Caption The design proposed to mimic the volume of the old bungalow with the intention of raising the house to overlook the landscape while providing breath-taking views of the sea and the Saltee Islands. Robert Mullan Photography This bold prolongation of the existing ho... More

Ardmore House

For this house bordering an alleyway on a traditional Chicago lot, Kwong Von Glinow flips the traditional residential section, arraying bedrooms on the first floor and living spaces on the second. This approach supports contemporary ways of living, emphasizing communal areas, interconnectivity, and flexible live-work spaces that receive ample natural light and engage the surrounding urban context. James Florio Photography A curved double-height atrium runs lengthwise from front to back doors, creating an interior courtyard that vertically connects the common areas on the first and second floors. Defined by a large picture window and a curving wall, the courtyard offers an informal multi-purpose area where residents can relax and their... More

Circular Garden Pavilion

At a villa with a large garden, this garden pavilion was designed as an annex. In addition to a hobby / billiards room, there is a storage room and a carport. The design is inspired by the case study houses from the 40’s-60’s of the last century. The building has a visible construction, the space flows from the inside to the outside and an cantilever running the entire length of the building connects the various functions. Where the case study houses were mainly a showcase of efficient, fast and cheap construction, in this pavilion the emphasis is on circular construction. In time, the building can be completely disassembled again, all parts are included in a material passport. The construction and facade are made of accoya woo... More

Polyvalent Studio

The project was conceived within the parameters of the caravan act, meaning in most contexts it does not require planning permission. Designed by students from Diploma Unit 7 at the CASS and built by them in just 12 days it is an exemplar of not only low embodied energy design but the capacity of students to take on and deliver live projects as part of their education.   The design is 30m2 prototype for a scalable studio built on a budget of £10,000. The design can be adapted with minimal modification to be situated at multiple sites and hosts multiple programmes including living, working and education. Imagined in section, the form drew inspiration from cantilevered barns traditionally used for the storage of agricultural prod... More

Waranara Early Learning Centre

Located in the ever-evolving Green Square precinct, the Waranara Early Learning Centre provides much needed day care for young residents in the local community. The project involves the adaptive reuse of a heritage-listed outpatients building into a 74 place Early learning space. A complex brief as well as a sensitive client has resulted in a challenging project. Careful attention has been placed on the overall useability of the Centre resulting in a cohesive and robust design bridging old and new. The integrity of the existing building has been retained - breathing new life into the structure – and a contemporary wing housing the entry, playspace and wraparound verandah has been grafted onto the original shell.   This permeabl... Oak House School

The Oak House School Baccalaureate Campus was completed in 2015 with Accoya® being used to build the facade of its new campus in Barcelona. Located next to an old villa in the school garden, the newly built campus was designed to provide functionality and character to a space used to prepare students for university. Designed by Trasbordo arquitectos, the facade of the building was created using several wooden Accoya® boards to provide natural ventilation and reduce the glare of the sun entering the classrooms. The Accoya® boards also absorbs external noise and reduce the sound that enters the rooms. Accoya® was also used to clad the upper floor of the School. The new building houses a conference room with cutting-edge techno... More

Transformation The Hinge

In the woods just north of the city of Arnhem a new neighborhood is being developed under the name 'Buitenplaats Koningsweg'. This former military site will be transformed into a cultural enclave. The complex known as 'De Scharnier', or in English 'The Hinge', is situated at the heart of the enclave. These interconnected buildings, erected at right angles to one another, used to accommodate the military theater in one 'leg' and the restaurant in the other, but have now become the home, workshop, and studio of a well-known artist. Arne Olivier Fotografie Transformation Most buildings on the military site date back to the 1960s and 70s and are in a bad state, but for reasons of sustainability it was decided to reuse and repurpose the bu... Church tower in Bleibach

The new church tower in Bleibach has many identities. Final sequence of a gothic and modern church ensemble, landmark in the centre of three Black Forest valleys, viewpoint and bell tower. The essential design elements, consisting of steep roof pitch, triangular basic form and materiality are all derived from the church inventory. The result is a building that bundles so many of the influences found that it could not stand in any other place.                                 The basic shape of the church tower is based on an equilateral triangle, which in Christian mythology stands for t...
