Bivacco Bredy is the winning proposal from an invited competition organized by YACademy and Cantieri d’Alta Quota on behalf of the Brédy family. Developed by BCW Collective, the design is a specific solution for a high altitude site in the Italian region of Valle d’Aosta, near the Laghi di Dzioule, two small alpine lakes at 2500m elevation in the secluded Vertosan Valley. The competition sought detailed designs of a bivouac to celebrate the memory of Claudio Brédy, a well-known politician and alpinist from Valle d’Aosta who tragically lost his life in a climbing accident at the end of 2017. In the Austrian alpine town of Bludenz in Vorarlberg, feld72 have completed the housing development Maierhof. The estate is situated within a community characterised by agriculture, old stables, single-family homes and multi-storey residential buildings. RURAL DENSIFICATIONThe project’s starting point was a 2014 development study for the triangular plot of about 8.5oo m². The task was to bring together density and context. The discrete refurbishment of this alpine barn gave new life to a structurally complex building that lies in a fragile context such as the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the Cadore area, these types of buildings are called “Tabià”. They are made of stone and wood and were typically used as stables on the ground floor and as haylofts on the upper ones. The exterior wooden boards were removed, carefully washed and later remounted. Meanwhile the beams and wooden pillars were exposed so as to analyse the complexity of the structure and its joints.
