The Family Tree House is a set of architectural interventions grafted onto a remnant coastal character house.  There is a family lineage to the house, it has been our Client’s Grandmother’s place and in turn his mother’s home. At its core was a humble one-bedroom hardwood framed cottage with an enclosed verandah wrapping along its eastern and northern edges. Accompanying and protecting the house is a colossal Weeping Fig planted generations ago, it has been climbed by our Client and his siblings as children and his own 3 boys whilst the family gathered beneath its boughs in the coolth of its shade. A large block in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne with a house crying out to be loved again. This project was to transform a dark and claustrophobic home into a breath of light filled openness. Birch Tree House is a thoughtful addition to an early-twentieth-century brick terrace house, located in the Maastricht suburb of Sint Pieter. This tiny little project has been a labour of love for me, which started when my client, Jasper, asked me to design a low-budget addition to their home. Henry House is a 140-year-old Victorian terrace house that has been refurbished and extended with a contemporary rear ground level extension. This Victorian is one of a pair of double-storey, single-fronted terraces that was originally built in 1878, and is part of the rich history of buildings that line this street in East Melbourne. The house had undergone an earlier renovation by the previous tenants that widened the footprint of the rear ground level rooms to take advantage of the full width of the narrow site. Malvern Garden House is a highly-considered adaption of an existing 1930’s period home in a hilly suburban pocket, with a new pavilion embedded within the terraced garden to the rear. Most fundamentally, the design response seeks to actively reposition the home within its unique site, thereby strengthening and celebrating the bonds of the everyday architectural experience within its immediate, lived-in landscape. WANGAL COUNTRY. Lilyfield House is an inner city home, conceived as a spatial assembly of internal and external rooms and volumes, opening to the light, to green spaces and rising to the district outlook. The rooms and platforms of the house pivot around a central atrium, integrating portions of a historic shop. Accessible from only two sides and subject to acoustic constraints under a flight path, these 3-storey alterations and additions cater for family living and working from home. A reduced materials palette of off-form concrete, black steel, plywood and bamboo flooring and historic fabric in white-set plaster, provides a generosity of space and light for a family of five. The Blinker House is located within a heritage conservation area within the suburb of Hunters Hill, close to the centre of Sydney. The site and surrounding properties are typically freestanding homes on medium and larger sized garden blocks. The existing house is an exceptional example of an Australian period home circa 1927. A 1980’s renovation existed to the rear of the house which did not fit the current owner’s requirements and expectations of family moving into the future. The primary brief was to create a more modern, open plan layout to the rear with some modification to the existing internal bedrooms to the front.
