Merion

This home was designed for a narrow in-fill lot in west Asheville with neighbors bordering either side of the property. To create privacy and a feeling of a sanctuary for our clients, we designed the home to sit back from the street and have a rear “courtyard” where the family could hangout, use the hot tub, sit by the fountain, and lounge without being seen. To further extend the use of the rear courtyard, we projected the living room out the rear of the house and lifted it on steel. This allowed for a treehouse like feel in the living room while also creating a covered outdoor eating area adjacent to the backyard activities. TreeTops

A designer’s home is one of the most challenging places to shape, especially when there are two designers. Reminiscing the days when a lack of options for furniture pieces led to the establishment of their design studio ‘The Works Interiors’, the designer duo at TWI, Raj and Devika Khosla, manifest their new home as an extension of their personalities and choices. TWI comes to a full circle with this 1800 sqft home, starting from the founder’s first home to this new home, aptly called Treetops, where endless visuals of the tops of trees, along with the chirping of the birds, seep indoors through large windows and the balconies. AMAZONIA COLLECTION

Amazonia comes from natural wood, its grains, colours and textures have been carefully created to obtain the closest finish to reality but in a much more ecological way, leaving aside the felling of trees and adding to the innovation all the advantages of porcelain stoneware and the zero waste of Cerámica Mayor. A series that expands longitudinally throughout a space, providing warmth and union, the avant-garde without forgetting tradition. Amazonia is a return to the wild origin of natural wood, maintaining its noble, pure character and faithful to its essence, with its grain and knots that are so characteristic of wood. In addition, its minimum maintenance, resistance and durability are some of the advantages of dealing with our c... More

waterfall house

Take a breath. Calm yourself. And enter the Waterfall house.    Inspired by the meditative forces of nature, the Waterfall house is a modern rendition of an urban sanctuary, and home to the Vashisht family in Jalandhar, Punjab. As one approaches the house, the exterior palette leaves a lasting impression. The facade is inspired by the rocky landscape and the snow-capped mountains of upper Himalayas. Dual waterfalls mark dual entrances into the house. Much like the origination point of a river from its glacier, the waterfalls translate into grand points of initiation into the house.   The informal entry frames a view of a landscaped court just as one enters, blurring lines of separation between indoor and outdoor. The form... More

Rancho da Flórida

This project utilizes passive sustainable practices as a baseline of design prior to integrating active systems. Breaking apart the programmatic spaces of the home (living, sleeping, and storage) and creating exterior circulation between these volumes resulted in smaller masses to cool. This also created two “breezeways” between the volumes, capturing the predominant east-west breezes and generating comfortable exterior spaces. The volumes are unified by one large roof, with generous overhangs on the west façade. Expansive overhangs shade the glass, providing natural daylighting, minimizing heat gain, and creating a comfortable outdoor living environment under roof. These measures reduce the energy load of the house, whi... More

Residence_58

An architectural project runs for at least an year and a half, starting from ideas to paper to site to completion. Over this time the architect grows and the project develops too, some things change some don't. We at PAA are flexible and innovating throughout the project cycle. Here we elaborate our learning process in 4 parts, the fourth one is the true test when people occupy the space.   STAGE 1_CONCEPT_2015-11-26 This story began with a quest to create the perfect dream home at the foothills of Aravali Hills with a scenic Lake view. The exterior aggrandize the beauty of  surroundings. Whilst internal planning follow passive climate control and function. The central courtyard suits hot and dry climate of Rajasthan and allows... The residential area where the site is located abuts a high-speed motorway in the Nishi ward of Niigata, Japan. The area was embanked with concrete retaining walls over 50 years ago and with age, these walls have weakened. Our design approach to alleviate the stresses incurred by these walls was to reduce the soil inside the site and convert the space into a courtyard. We chose to create a scenic space within these walls for the generation to come, who will inherit this site for the next 50 years.     By removing the soil and freeing up the space to create a new basement, a new benefit revealed itself. The height of the retaining walls not only reduced the noise coming from the high-speed motorway, it also blocked the stron... More

Gheisizadeh Residential Apartment

Text description provided by the architects. In Gheisizadeh residential apartment project, our main effort was to provide the maximum possible outdoor space to the residents, while creating the maximum visual privacy from outside to inside. The initial idea was to create a flexible and variable building façade. The intention was to reach the desired result by changing the openings, "While giving the residents the right to choose their level of privacy".The effort was to, while respecting the introversion aspect of the residential units, consider implementing a terrace to protect the disturbing severe direct sunlight in summer and benefit from the sunlight in the cold weather of winter because of the warm and dry climate of Shiraz. As a resu... More

Safari Residential Apartment

Text description provided by the architects. The Safari Residential Project is located at the southeast of Shiraz, one of the oldest part of the city. Today, the attention of the architects in the city is more focused on the wealthy areas and there is a lack of innovative projects in such poor areas. The site context’s situation is in decline, and architecture is being oblivious, which has affected the city fabric structure and visual aspect of the region. To this end, the initial perspective on the creation of this project is a slight attempt to revive the recession situation of the design site. The idea of the design was based on creating a connecting and reliant element on all floors. This central element, which is in the inner shell of t... More

45m2 Home

The goal of this project was to transform an existing storage on the roof of a residential apartment to a livable place. Considering the fact that existing space was very limited, design team initial concept was to incorporate all the residential required spaces in such a small space. Unlike the typical process of dividing the space into various spaces, and each space for one specific activity, 45 sqm. home offers one single space which changes constantly based on different functions and activities. The initial area of the project was 30 sqm in order to increase the space, we expanded the space toward the south edge of the building to achieve a 45 sqm. space and also a better exterior view. At the additional space, the roof was moved one me... More

Housing Experiment A

Architecture has the capacity of situating us in space, and making the inhabitability of a site possible. In many ways it is the most powerful tool that humans have to fully interact with its surroundings and natural environment. Photos by Tatiana Mestre Photography Photos by Tatiana Mestre Photography In sites with imposing natural landscapes, architecture scales us and works as a transition so that humans can –at a distance- absorb its surroundings. It is only through architecture that we are able to appropriate a site and live it.
