The Gelders Huis project combines new-build with the renovation of the provincial government building in Arnhem. Prominently situated in the town center, the building complex forms the final piece of the urban design puzzle around the market square. The monumental Provincial House was designed in the 1950s by Jo Vegter as a unique Gesamtkunstwerk, integrating architecture, interior, furniture and applied art. This concept also formed a guiding principle for the renovation and extension, along with improving the overall urban situation. The National Heritage Museum is an open air museum, founded at the beginning of the twentieth century to preserve memories of rural culture and traditional crafts in Holland. In niches in the wooded countryside outside Arnhem, completely furnished farmhouses, shops and workshops from different parts of the country have been brought together. A visit is certainly educational, but today it has to be an attraction as well. To achieve this broader concept a new exhibition building was needed to display the splendid collection, making the museum less dependent on fair weather. With this in mind, Mecanoo has viewed its task as twofold – to provide practical facilities, while also appealing to the public’s imagination. More

The healing environment concept originates from the USA and its basic principle is that a carefully designed environment has a beneficial effect on the well-being of the patient. The advantages include a generally shorter hospital stay, reduced medication requirements and a better experience for the patient.
