Taller MRD and DFArquitectos collaborate to revitalize the Santa María Petapa market in Oaxaca, Mexico, offering it a new opportunity after the devastating earthquake of 2017. Established by the Urban Improvement Program (PMU) and headed by the Secretariat of Agrarian and Territorial Development and Urban (SEDATU), this project had as its main objective the unification and integration of a previously urban and socially fractured space. The collaboration and empathy between architecture and gastronomy were born intangible from its conception, marking common values; the countryside, honesty, humility, and simplicity of the raw materials, the craftsmanship, and the warmth of home. Local integration and global coherence propose the luxury of its spatial quality and the atmosphere it offers. A space that is free of pretensions and unnecessary ornaments and coatings. This time, we sneak in a home in El Cabañal, on the top floor of a building from the late seventies which is surrounded by pitched roofs and courtyards. Almost like an intruder, it is erected oblivious to the traditional construction methods of the district. There we find metal beams and pillars supporting slabs made of concrete joists and ceramic vaults. A classic from that era. The refurbished home is in a Valencia city centre building. Built around 1900, it has wooden beams and joists, ceramic vaults and solid brick walls. After 1900, the building underwent full refurbishment in order to reinforce the original structure adding a metal reinforcement structure. Germán Cabo Our refurbishment will aim to bring all those hidden ribs of the building out into the open. Elements that for a long time were generally placed behind a false wattle ceiling due to the little aesthetic value they held. This 80 m² property was built in 1930, with highly compartmentalised spaces and inner rooms with no ventilation to the outside. This home in the Patraix district, to the south of Valencia, required a refurbishment that would adapt to the young couple’s reality. The starting point was therefore defined as extending spaces to enhance natural light and cross-ventilation within the home. Our proposal is based on an architectural design that combines all spaces, making them more permeable and better connected. It seeks a wood-covered element to unify the home, featuring from west to east, and which contains much of the programme. Mezze Residence #2 is part of a set of four private houses located in Quito, Ecuador, on the Tumbaco Valley, on the northwestern foothills of the Ilaló inactive Volcano.   The preexistence of many avocado and lemon trees on the site, and the direct views of the volcano where the precursors of many design decisions which had to be weaved with the owners requirements to have a house that required to have seemingly opposite qualities of privacy and transparency.  Thru the main access, a great avocado tree welcomes the frontal façade which embodies the spirit of privacy with a concrete volume that, has almost no openings, and folds diagonally to the main wood entrance door. Its surroundings and topography are contextualized with the climate, so that the intense vegetation and shades of green surround it, leaving only a clear space that opens the view towards the wetlands and the Cruces river. Under these conditions, a house was sought that does not impact the environment and that blends into the intense vegetation, maintaining fluidity and the interior-exterior connection without being knocked down by the wind. HW Studio's office is located where just recently were the wood drying ovens of Señal furniture factory owned by Don Shoemaker, one of the most important Mexican furniture designers of the 20th century. When we started developing this house, we wanted to explore the architectonic and sensorial possibilities offered by a patio, containing small, nestled forests, Almost in the same way we did it in our last project. However, our client had a very specific request: he wanted us to develop a 250m2 house on a 285m2 piece of land, leaving only the remainder 45m2 available for the patio we were looking for. When we began to work on this project, the client showed us a warehouse of 8.00 x 40.00 meters, located two blocks from one of the most important music schools in the country, the former convent of XVI Century Dominican nuns of Santa Catalina de Siena, and one of the most beloved, beautiful and visited squares in Morelia: Las Rosas. When we first envisioned this house, we imagined a small, silent forest of red oaks, and how that silence would be broken by the wind rustling the foliage on trees and the sound of footsteps on wood. This forest would be nestled in a patio, evoking the architecture of the old houses of the city. The patio would be enclosed by four volumes composing the house. JA House, or The House that Hides Behind the Hill, is a project that we imagined from the very beginning as a discreet, slight horizontal line highlighting the sky and the mountains in the background, with the latest sun rays draining in between. Cesar Belio   We had to keep the main facade timidly hidden from the eyes of those circulating the streets of the Santa Barbara glen. We wanted the house to be so intimate and silent that only suggested its own presence, avoiding any presumption, exaggerated exhibition, or the typical ostentation of the place where it is located.
