In 2019, we were commissioned to create a series of sculptural benches for Sahara Mall in Riyadh, transforming public seating into an artistic and functional experience. The project brought together parametric design, advanced digital fabrication, and meticulous craftsmanship, resulting in a collection of 16 benches and 6 Rain Gatherer tables. The existing library consists of a large information desk and a bookshelf. It was a more concentrated space for storing books than for users to stay. First of all, the size and arrangement of the information desk were adjusted to secure a reading space and allow various types of reading activities to take place. Rubens Square is a triangular square with a large opening towards the sea. Two long benches oriented parallel to the water are bordered by a wall of tempered glass which acts as protection from the wind. It is a particularly social place where elderly people often watch children play. The square’s tiles have a mosaic-like pattern with maritime tones that refer to the nearby sea. Blues, grey-greens and whites are interwoven like an abstract pointillist painting. Only the white tiles are strictly arranged diagonally.
