Madrona House

The Madrona House nestles into a historic Seattle hilltop neighborhood, looking east to Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountain Range beyond. Built for a downsizing couple that owned the historic craftsman house next door, the house was designed to maximize light and connection to the outdoors, with a strong sense of mass and materiality. Kevin Scott Kevin Scott Kevin Scott Kevin Scott Kevin Scott Kevin Scott Kevin Scott Kevin Scott The home was designed as a plinth with thick walls and hearth rising out of it, capped by a carved wooden volume. The irregular textures of the concrete change with the time of day and the color of the sky through the seasons, giving a sense of heft and permanence to the... More

LC3 House

Right from the initial discussions regarding the Casa LC3 project, the owners brought forth a series of brazilian modern architecture references. These references encompassed not only aesthetic considerations and an affinity for materials but also the concepts of pure forms and prioritization of functionality. Leo Rait Leo Rait Leo Rait This focus, combined with a contemporary housing program, set a fertile ground for experimentation in the project's development, aligning with our architectural approach here at Largo. Leo Rait Leo Rait Consequently, the project's essence arose from the suspension of the private spaces, housing four suites divided into two blocks to allow for cross ventilation and optimal arrangeme... 10 homes showcasing the pleasing and practical use of board-formed concrete

The woodgrain-textured pattern of board-formed concrete creates an appearance that is warm and tactile. The concrete retains its solidity and strength, yet it is visually softened. Board-formed concrete — also known as board-marked concrete — involves pouring concrete into formwork made using timber boards. A decorative impression of the wood’s grain and knots is then left on the cast concrete. The use of board-formed concrete in construction will result in numerous textured effects, with a myriad of characterful wood-like motifs. The homes featured here showcase the pleasing and practical use of board-formed concrete in several ways, from constructing an entire house to acting as a retaining wall.   1. The House a... More

M Royce Architecture wraps the Oxford Triangle house in spatial alchemy of industrial materials

House Acute

A modest wedge shaped parcel of land on the edge of a coastal bluff inspired a robust angular-shaped holiday home. Two long off form concrete pavilions follow the long edges of the site and meet at the site’s most prominent corner, rising up from the native landscape not unlike the natural sandstone escarpments in the locality. The concrete walls of both levels are articulated in their respective textures, and form humble backdrops to the surrounding landscape, both new and existing.  Brett Boardman Brett Boardman Internally the home is as comfortable and intimate for 2 as it is for 10 persons, with a range of separate living spaces to retreat to within the acute spaces (ocean side) of the plan. A roof terrace enables... More

The forest informs Faulkner Architects’ latest project tucked away in between the Californian trees

Close to the north shore of Lake Tahoe, Faulkner Architects completed a 4,500-square-foot four-bedroom house nestled in between pine and red fire trees. The architects shaped the building like a simple rectangular volume in order to minimize impact on the site. Joe Fletcher An ebonized steel rainscreen protects the vulnerable wood-framed part of the house from wildfire, referring in function and texture to the bark of adjacent trees. Joe Fletcher The materialization and fenestration reflect the behaviour of the forest that surrounds the building. Throughout the house the architects used cut basalt stone floors, unfinished reclaimed teak ceilings and floors, board-formed concrete, and white gypsum. Joe Fletcher Faulkner Arc... More
