Brisbane architecture

A tiny pre-1911 cottage on a tiny 253m2 site, the design works hard to find generosity. The existing house is moved forward, a relaxation to all boundary edges enables enough space to construct one special room to the rear. The project builds less in order to provide generosity on a constrained site - the special room remains flexible, void of any fixed walls or cabinetry that could dictate the permanence of the occupants’ routine. As experts in delivering flexible spaces, Amicus was tasked with transforming Kilcoy Global Foods' office in Brisbane, Australia, into a multi-functional hub. The goal was to create a space that immersed customers and staff in a food journey from paddock to plate. Forest & Lane delves into our fascination with contemporary Queensland and our deep reverence for the local Murri way of life. We have long admired the Queenslander and our concept pays homage to the unique architectural set up of elevating living yet maintaining the natural topography of the land. Composed of two buildings raised 30m off the ground modestly supported by slender pilotis, we seek to evacuate the ground plane and to introduce a new urban thoroughfare; the linear forest, the laneway and the cabinet of curiosities all within a single urban gesture. This project involved a strategic recalibration of a small post-war home, that had been in the family for two generations. The design centres around a new primary living pavilion that modestly, but poetically engages inhabitants with the landscape. A modest but crafted palette of materials, including brick and timber define the new post-war architecture. Sorrel Street is a project that explores the juxtaposition between historical context and contemporary architecture within a broader subtropical paradigm. Beyond the initial stark contrast that presents between the new and old, a more subtle debate about edges, openings and thresholds is being had. The house seeks to engage with the land at the rear of the site where the natural topography meets the outdoor living areas. Punctuated by a swimming pool that bounds the site to the west, the combined indoor and outdoor living areas form a single level, consolidated space where the practical needs of a young family can poetically be met.
