Kent Downs
This woodland retreat sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Kent countryside. Approached via a sweeping drive, the building gradually reveals itself within the landscape. Inside, the house uses a simple palette of natural timber, stone, plaster and glass, the tines of the oak contributing to the feeling of warmth throughout.

A local ragstone wall divides the two volumes to form the entrance. To one side the bedroom wing sits tall, and to the other, the single storey living pavilion appears to float out over the landscape.

Cambridge Central Mosque by Marks Barfield Architects envisioned as a calm oasis within a grove of trees
Stemming from a limited international competition that began in 2007, the Cambridge Central Mosque is a 1000 person capacity mosque that is sustainable as well as socially and architecturally integrated into its neighbourhood. Designed by Marks Barfield Architects, the Mosque is intended to announce Islam’s presence in Cambridge as a spiritual and cultural centre not only for Muslims but also for the wider community.

In 2009, Marks Barfield Architects won the competition with the concept of the mosque as a calm oasis within a grove of trees. The link between the local and the Islamic is expressed through the natural world. For centuries, mosques throughout the world have adapted to their local building mater... More

Devon Valley House
Nearly two decades on from its original completion, we have revisited and photographed Devon Valley House.
Tucked beneath a hill and hidden from view, this new build home sits in a picturesque Devon valley. The brief was to create a contemporary family home that would sit quietly among its surroundings, replacing the dilapidated farmhouse which once sat on the site. The new building closely followed the envelope of the original but the details and look are very different, giving a much more contemporary feel.
Inside, the house is open, light and understated with the ground floor almost entirely open plan. The living area is partitioned from the kitchen and dining area by an open-ended wall that contains the fireplace and c... More

Devon Coast House

A stone gable end is the first glimpse you get of this holiday home, with an industrial chimney, dark against the grey stone. We were asked to include some elements of a New England beach house, and so green oak boarding was used together with the local stone. The building is simple in form - a neat pitched volume coupled with a generous entrance porch. This porch provides a formal entrance as well as direct access to a large mud room for drying wetsuits from surfing and muddy boots from walking the costal paths.
