Atelier Deshaus translates the topography of Jinshanling into a tranquil stone cloister
Tucked away in the valley of Jinshan Mountain in Laowa village, China, the Upper cloister designed by Atelier Deshaus is a contemporary stone temple built for meditation and introspection. The structure blends seamlessly into the topography through its stepped configuration and stone exteriors, complementing the ancient Great Wall, seen in the distance.

The upper cloister seeks to create an intrinsic moment through the environment and the opening and closing of space, from the upper entrance courtyard to the lower open meditation hall.

Seoul Yeodamjae establishes harmony between a former temple, trees, concrete and glass
Located in Changsin-dong, Seoul, a former Buddhist temple named Wongaska had become abandoned and disconnected from its local context. Originally constructed in 1983, Emer-sys Architects undertook the transformation of the structure into a cultural centre that includes a library for children as well as a feminist library.

Addressing the disjointed site context was a key challenge for the architects from the outset. In the middle of Naksan mountain, the location descends 10 meters and is surrounding by both generic apartment blocks and sites of historic and cultural significance including the turtle rock around which the story of Queen consort Jeongsun, the wife of King Danjong, is centred.
