Di Zock

ModCraft Hudson tile was selected by landscape designer Di Zock to add a dimensional material to create the movement and flow she wanted for this Pacific Palisades outdoor renovation. The contemporary home recieved a makeover of the front and backyard that incorporates architectural elements from the inside of the house and the exterior into the design. The goal was to create beautiful and functional spaces for the family to enjoy meals outside as well as entertain guests. Flora of the surrounding area in the Pacific Palisades includes eucylptus and oak trees. Di's palette for the design included silvers, blues and greens using Yucca Rostrata, prostrate rosemary, and agave which complements the charcoal gray house.  The addition of M... More

Hacienda Tiburon Landscape

This sculptural garden overlooking the San Francisco Bay reflects the vision of passionate art collectors whose personal artistic vision includes the idea of the landscape being experienced and enhanced through play and exploration. As a result, their whimsical five-acre garden incorporates distinct spaces that weave together architecture and landscape, providing places for reflection, play, and discovery.   At the entrance, a folding deck projects from the house, merging the building with a landscape of magnolias, grasses, and ferns. It also frames an existing stepping-stone installation by artist Topher Delaney, which spells out a Christopher Marlowe love poem in Braille.   The deck’s warping planes create a threshold... More

Tank Hill Residential Garden

Perched at the edge of Tank Hill in San Francisco, California, this garden is an exploration of prospect and refuge—both nestling into and perching above the dramatic topography it calls home. In San Francisco, project size is limited by the high cost of living and the city’s topography. This Tank Hill site was embedded in a hillside with a steep, wooded backyard, offering limited outdoor options for its young family. To increase inhabitable space and maximize natural light, Surfacedesign carved into the hillside to create an intimate backyard garden inspired by the client’s affinity for rock-climbing and sculpture. The architectural planes of the retaining walls that structure the garden are explorations of the essence of... More

Uliveto Woodside Garden

Located on a vegetative gradient in Northern California, this three-acre property is in the Silicon Valley community of Woodside.  The property owners commissioned Surfacedesign to merge the residential structures—designed by architecture firm Olson Kundig—and the surrounding landscape into a single, flowing, integrated entity.  The philosophical design approach prioritized blurring the sight lines of the parcel’s varying elevations and “borrowing” vistas of the adjacent Santa Cruz mountains.  This vision was realized by innovatively creating four distinct planting areas: olive orchard, house entrance (succulents), water-wise perennial meadow, and California native meadow transition edge.  ... Zinfandel Lane Garden

Set within one of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards in California, the St. Helena residence floats above the surrounding vines, extending the landscape into the house and pulling life out into the garden.  An olive tree lined gravel driveway frames the entrance, culminating in the oak-lined property edge, where an existing heritage oak anchors the property.  This oak orients the site, marking the central axis of the house, pool and—through the vineyard—the barn.  Salvaged ancient olive trees are integrated into the barn landscape, tying into the reclaimed wood of the barn siding and framing the entrances to the building.  Exuberant perennial plantings frame the trees and provide seasonal interest—Nepeta fl...
