Concept Architect-designer Natalia Karjakina started the project when the customer finished building the "box" and barely had time to make the roof truss system. Initially, the layout and design of the house was ordered from another private architect's bureau, but from the original concept in the end only the outlines of the plan remained. Some 10 kms away from Shimla, the project Hill House is banked on one of the peripheral roads of a compounded residential area, AIRA Homes. The place holds decades of memories for the family, now visited by them only as a summer retreat. In 2018, the mother and the daughter unanimously took up the challenge to renovate, with the intent of modifying the interiors to serve their current lifestyle. The clients, a young family, commissioned a comfortable house for four habitants that was functional, safe, luminous and unique in the area; but also demanded a low-cost and low maintenance home. The challenge was to accomplish this in a site with a limited surface (102m2, 6x17m), rugged topography and preexistent urban elements (trees, light posts and a telephone facilities box) that can’t be affected during the construction. This house on a gently sloping wooded site is the personal residence of the architect, who had lived with his wife on the property for three years in a guesthouse of his design. Features of the lushly forested site are a seasonal stream and stunning views of the Sleeping Indian, an iconic peak across the valley to the east. The goal of the design for the main house was to complete the compound where multiple generations of the architect’s extended family could gather and experience the wonders of the site, while also serving as an intimate home for two. With perfectly proportioned symmetry and classical design elements like barrel arches, beige marble cladding, and Corinthian columns, the facade also pays an ode to modernity with wrought-iron railings, stunning black contemporary window frames, and tasteful exterior nightscape lighting. Classical luxury is a concept that translates well in posh, upscale modern homes, so this villa located in Doha, Qatar was the perfect canvas to articulate this particular style. Keeping the Arabic culture in mind, the CAS design team went on to design a tasteful version of the classical luxury concept in every part of this home’s interior design. The majlis and adjoining rest rooms were given special cultural consideration both functionally and aesthetically. A column of natural light as a core element turns a house into a living object. 103 house in Algarve, Portugal, depicts a different perspective. Squeezed between two traditional neighbourhood fishermen´s houses, the limited front width led the Studio to develop the new project inwardly. The architects have made the most of formerly adverse disposition: the sloping and irregular topography has been fully exploited in virtue of spatial colonization that allows for the extension of the different enclosed rooms beyond their indoor limits.
