De Kroon: Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Apartments

De Kroon is a unique gas-free apartment complex, designed in close collaboration between 1:1 Architectuur and H2W Architecten. This striking building, located on the outskirts of the Oranjewijk, is the result of bold ideas and a successful partnership between the two locally renowned architectural firms. The creation of De Kroon is based on a deep analysis of user groups and the context of the location. Thanks to the courage of the client A.C.U. Bouw, we were given the freedom to conceive something special. The building is situated along the green veins of the Oranjewijk, and this aspect is integrated into the design with cantilevered balconies, allowing residents to fully enjoy the view and sunlight. 1:1 Architectuur 1:1 Architectu... State Archives

The volume for the State Archives, located in the city center, is meticulously matched to the scale of the surrounding buildings. The sturdy corner building respects the pattern of the street onto which it fronts, while the long horizontal volume behind adheres to the cornice height of the surrounding streets and alleys. At the end of the horizontal wing, the facade is set back from the plot boundary. This makes space available for a small public square in the midst of this dense 19th-century urban setting and extends a welcoming hand to passersby.  Filip Dujardin The public parts of the building face this more intimate urban space. The glass façade welcomes visitors and leads them to the building behind, where both the ad... More

Whitechapel Gallery

In the best museums and galleries one finds one's way through a series of rooms, where the artefacts are carefully lit and set off by calm backgrounds. A degree of repetition helps navigation, some variation helps orientation. Filip Dujardin The proposals for the Whitechapel Art Gallery are bold in their restraint (someone commented: 'where’s the architecture?') and seize a simple but powerful opportunity: lower and upper floors are configured as circuits of rooms, with the stylistically different but volumetrically similar existing galleries linked up by smaller, more domestically scaled gallery spaces. The subtle rhythms and contrasts of the rooms form the backdrop to the wide variety of work on display (historic and contempor... More

Boekentoren - University Library

The conservation project for the Book Tower aims at restoring the historical site of the University Library, situated in the lively quartier Latin of Ghent, meanwhile at transforming it into a library for the 21st Century. The design unites the ambitions of the University to respectfully repair the monumental site to its original condition, but also to render it a contemporary house for a great diversity of users and for the valuable own collection of the institute. Kristien Daem The Ghent University Library is internationally renowned for its ‘heritage collection’ of manuscripts, books, coins, curiosa, newspapers and magazines. The study into the conservation project revealed that the conservation of these precious object... More

ZNA Cadix Hospital

Situated at the head of Spoor Noord, the hospital is a hinge between the park, the docks and the city, and thus benefits from each of their qualities. The limited surface area of the site requires the hospital to be organised vertically. The hospital structure has a clearly discernible layered construction. All outpatient activities with consultation rooms, centres of knowledge and medical technical services are in the lowest section. The various nursing units are located in an L-shape at the top of the pedestal, above which is the administrative block. This entirety is bisected horizontally several times by interweaving the building with its surroundings. The hospital anchors itself in the urban fabric by releasing the entire ground floor... More

Art Forms

A heritage Victorian terrace house at Fitzroy gets a renovation in collaboration with an Artist Client. Tatjana Plitt An Architect-turned-sculptor Client, and an Architect with a penchant for art, approach the renovation of a Victorian terrace house in the heart of Fitzroy as artists might approach their work.  Together they have wrapped, carved out,  inserted, framed, coloured, decorated  and lit the project as an artist might. Tatjana Plitt Our clients' family house was lovely, but rundown, its center was dark and awkward, the living area too small, the main bedroom had no En suite and there was the usual lack of storage. The Artist Owner came to us with moody grayscale 3D models that expressed some strong conce... More

Narre Warren North Mosque

The Narre Warren North Mosque will provide a place of worship and assembly for the local Muslim community set within an expansive valley setting. A site-responsive approach integrates built form with the natural surrounds, while offering new prayer hall mosque, ancillary building, pedestrian walks and car parking. The development comprises two co-located buildings that work cohesively by juxtaposing height and scale. The form draws upon the site topography and orientation of Mecca. Caption The materiality of the building is sympathetic to its location and context. The external walls are dark concrete paired with landscape berms that immerse the building into the natural landscape. The roof material is dark and recessive to further g... More

Chadstone Art Facade

JCB collaborated with Australian artist Matthew Johnson to design an extensive art facade concealing an existing four level carpark structure at Chadstone Shopping Centre. Peter Bennetts Matthew’s painterly approach to the facade captures the motion of flowing fabrics, a nod to Chadstone’s identity as Australia’s fashion capital. The use of a perforated panelised system on a steel substructure utilises smart building technology. Peter Bennetts The outcome is a friendly, permeable and accessible community destination, incorporating new and existing landscaping into the design while enhancing Chadstone’s brand identity. HADDO YARD

Denizen Works have completed their first housing scheme, Haddo Yard, a new-build block of seven contemporary apartments for developer Arrant Land.  The project, on the site of a former bungalow, is located in Whitstable, Kent and takes it’s name from Oliver Haddo, a character in former resident Somerset Maugham’s novel, ‘The Magician’. Haddo Yard forms part of a series of projects initiated by Arrant Land that seek to explore how a town with a distinct visual identity can be enhanced by adventurous but contextual contemporary design.  David Barbour Having secured planning permission for the scheme, Arrant Land approached Denizen Works to develop the detailed design.
