In London’s East End, a former brewery building from the early 19th century has been thoughtfully converted into The Gilbert & George Centre. The building’s conversion was designed by SIRS Architects in close collaboration with Gilbert & George, the renowned and performative British art duo. Axis Mundi breaks free of this form with its self-initiated proposal for the Whitney Downtown, experimenting—like all good art—with a more creative and challenging design. A dramatically irregular superstructure constitutes a perimeter lattice that conceals staircases, escalators, elevators and mechanical rooms. The Rieckhallen, a former two-story warehouse, was refurbished to form part of the Hamburger Bahnhof, a contemporary art museum in Berlin. The museum extension now provides around 10000 m2 of exhibition space for the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection.  The extension is linked to the main building by a bridge, where two large windows offer views that position the visitors within the surrounding landscape. The entire technical infrastructure, including the climate control system, is rendered invisible by integration into the new roof.
