Ochre Barn
This is a project instigated by Carl Turner Architects from the outset. We both designed and built this project. This process of as allowed us scope to experiment, learn and test ideas. The conversion of this once derelict Norfolk barn creates a series of spaces intended as part home, part meeting place, with the capacity to accommodate working, thinking and making. We have treated the existing building exterior as if it were listed, and inserted a new lining to the interior. Doors and windows have been set back to this line to emphasise the wall thickness and expose the beautiful bull nose brick details. The roof tiles have been re-claimed. COUNTRY HOUSE IN EXTREMADURA
Positioned within the rolling landscape of the caceres province of spain, the 'estate in extremadura' is a single family residence designed by madrid-based firm abaton. Transformed from an abandoned stable, the contemporary intervention is respectful of the environment just the structure was in its original state. The orientation of the building exposes an elongated southern facade to the sloping terrain and valley, introducing daylight throughout the entire day. The solid stone supporting walls have been selectively opened to harness the natural illumination, structurally supplemented with metal pillars while maintaining the rustic exterior. Islington House Remodeling
A rear extension and internal remodeling of a dilapidated Victorian terrace house bringing an abundance of natural light deep into the heart of the home.
The existing house was in a run down state and required considerable repair work. In our initial planning negotiations with Islington Council, we agreed to reinstate the traditional bay window that had been removed and this eased the way to getting permission for a substantial contemporary rear extension.

Pool & outdoor lounge
The project issues from the desire to create a bath and recreation area as core of relationship between the two centenary houses of Can Xomeu Sord, located in the Vénda de Sa Talaissa (La Mola) on the island of Formentera.
With the objective of the integration on the landscape, the intervention must be rooted in the complex weave of walls and traditional dry stone outbuildings that characterize this type of traditional rural settlements in the smaller of the Pitiüsas. This limitation became an opportunity to formalize a subtle filter between the two houses that offers a close but border meeting area, open to the beautiful view of the lighthouse of La Mola but intimate, that permeates local tradition while echoes the modernity.

Power House
Power House, Paul Archer Design’s refurbishment of a private house in Highbury North London, takes the modernisation of a typical London Victorian terraced house in a new direction with a highly sculptural timber clad rear extension.
Located in close proximity to the entrance of Arsenal Football Club’s original stadium on Highbury Hill, the house was previously the home of the stadium’s grounds man. The front door of the house is painted in the signature red of the Gunner’s home kit as a nod to the house’s history.
The focal point of the new house is a spacious double height kitchen/ diner at the rear of the property, which is created from the interplay of interlocking volumes made of frameless glass panels and linear timber panels.... Meer

House Like Village
With the transformation of an old harbor-cantina on KNSM island in Amsterdam into large apartments, this building changed its function but kept its identity.
The house we created is composed from 4 smalles 'houses', containing the more private spaces and supporting facilities. In between them, an open multifunctional space emerges (the streets) and a natural daylight enters deep into the house.
The elevated second level is used for cooking, dining, working and has a guest house, connected by walking bridges. These 'roof terraces' are placed in such way that you can fully enjoy the view of the adjacent harbour. The walls consist of closets and cupboards which double function as a wooden support structure. Bergamot Artist Lofts
Program: This project is located at Bergamot Station, an internationally known art center comprised of a series of industrial buildings converted into 45 art galleries including the recently opened Santa Monica Museum of Art. The program includes a ground level studio/gallery space with three artist live/work loft spaces above. The project completed construction in 1999 and was realized with a construction budget of $87/square foot.
The fundamental challenge in this project was determining how to maintain continuity and coherence with the character of the existing industrial warehouse buildings at Bergamot Station without compromising formal and material experimentation and innovation. SH HOUSE
Amsterdam-based practice BaksvanWengerden Architects has completed the 'SH house', an enlargement to an existing home in a village between Haarlem and the north sea coast in Bentveld, The Netherlands. Constructed in 1932, the masonry exterioris topped with a gable roof with overhanging eaves. Appearing to continue the slope of the pitched roof, the angled sidewalls of the concrete intervention form a triangular section when viewed from the yard.The original interior was very dark and enclosed due to a compartmental organization which separated functions. The Stables
Friday April 5th 1946, on a beautifully clear Spring afternoon crowds cheered as the 25/1 racehorse, “Lovely Cottage”, strode triumphantly past the finishing post to be crowned winner of the Grand National, the UKs largest horse race. Trained by Tommy Rayson and ridden by Captain Robert Petre at the first true Aintree Grand National race since 1940, after the Second World War, and the last to take place on a Friday, which had been the tradition since 1876.
That weekend “Lovely Cottage” returned home to the small village of Headbourne Worthy, near Winchester. He received a hero’s welcome before settling in for a well-earned rest in the stables at the Manor House where he was housed.

REHABILITATION OF FORMER PRISON AS CULTURAL CIVIC CENTER in Palencia
The former Palencia Provincial Prison complex was created at the end of the XIX century, built with brick bearing walls following the “neomudéjar” style, and composed mainly of four two-storey wings and some other with one storey. On this building was planned a comprehensive refurbishment to transform the former use and convert it into a center that promotes the social and cultural activity in this part of the town.
Our proposal intends to convert the former prison into a meeting place, recovering some of the old spaces, and creating at the same time new structures that make possible the new planned activities. Rehabilitation Of The Antigua Alcoholera Extremeña
1st prize nacional architectural competition.
The project of the Museum of the Wine in Almendralejo (Badajoz) poses and assumes the duality that exists in the process of elaboration of the wine. Science and art, system and chance, technical and inspiration are the opposites that build, in a mysterious, magic, almost miraculous way, a fine wine. The buildings of an ancient alcohol industry will accommodate the museum, both the expositive and service areas -the batches of documents and pieces, administration and the rest of public spaces-, reusing its volumes, gaps, heights and voids in a way that the continent-museum itself would be part of the collection. Rabbit Hole
A farm in the sloping Pajottenland landscape becomes a private family home and veterinary practise. A masoned brick shaft that connects the practise, the private home and the garden brings order to a cluster of existing buildings. The shaft was nicknamed ‘the rabbit hole’. It leads to an inside yard, which is also finished in brickwork. From the higher location of the castle of Gaasbeek, the brick roofing of the rabbit hole can easily be spotted. Just like the castle, it has become a visually strong and culturally defining element in the landscape.
Once inside the house, other unexpected surprises await the visitor’s eye. Even the smallest of windows frames the age-old landscape with its seventeenth-century castle.

Dovecote Studio

Introduction
The Dovecote Studio forms part of the internationally renowned music campus at Snape Maltings, founded by Benjamin Britten in abandoned industrial buildings on the Suffolk coast. Snape Maltings is a nationally important complex of Grade 2 listed industrial buildings, many of them still derelict. The plan for their regeneration included expansion of the music campus, better landscaping, provision of a new visitor centre, and construction of a musicians’ café. The Dovecote Studio completes the project with a studio for visual artists within one of the most sensitive structures on site, the ruin of a dovecote located prominently on the edge of the marsh.
