The plywood textures and radiant light dominate the senses inside this converted duplex in central London. The project capitalises on the idea that a small home can be full of nuances that help unlock the potential of the different experiences that the space can offer. The main feature of the house is the plywood spiral staircase, reminiscent of a tree trunk, that connects the two floors. The layered ply plays with a range of tonalities that give visual texture to the structure, accentuating the handmade craft that makes the home a warm and charismatic living space. Atmos were commissioned to design and deliver the exuberant centrepiece staircase that weaves between the 3 levels of experience at HIDE (bar BELOW; informal a-la-carte dining at GROUND; elegant tasting menu ABOVE).The stair’s design creates a plant-like structure that grows like an irrepressible life-force from beneath, bursting from the shadows of the basement towards the daylight above.It twists upwards, spiralling energetically like a corkscrew, steps unfurling seamlessly from the structural stem like leaves, while further branches similarly delaminate to form a delicate wavy balustrade guiding the guests carefully upwards.“StairStalk” finally unfurls at the 1st floor level, as if reuniting with its vast family of arboreal brethren... Mezzo Atelier was commissioned to design the interiors and furniture of a 42 sq. craft beer shop and bar in Milan. Located at the core of the old “Isola’s” neighbourhood in Milan, between tradition and the city’s new business district, the bar is on the ground floor of a corner building, next to other commercial spaces and an old carpentry. The space has great visibility towards the street and abundant sunlight coming inside. Taking advantage of the space’s generous height, the ground floor with only 23 sq. was expanded by introducing an open upper floor on the back.
