Ried-Brig is small village situated along the road that connects through the Simplon Pass, the Canton of Valais in Switzerland with Italy. Its small and picturesque historic city-center was during the last decades circumscribed by a natural urban expansion. Although it has kept its attractiveness it has lost its centrality and significance. The project site is situated at the entrance of this historic city center and encompasses the village school premises, a parking lot and a sports facility building. At the foothills of the mountain and at the edge of the old village, the building integrates the topographical variations and articulates the different outdoor areas. The kindergarten, situated between the barns and the houses of the village, has a form that is in dialogue with the existing buildings. Its position delineates the edge of the schoolyard on the village side, softening the transition between public and private, old and new. The project takes advantage of existing infrastructure by building a ramp on top of the existing underground carpark’s ramp, offering both easy and compliant access to the building and allowing it to successfully address the main street. The pine trees at the northwestern corner of this site form a gateway into the site. The pine grove brings people together and locals are free to meet up here. It gives onto a succession of patios, lawns, green roofs, pines, other trees and plant-covered partitions that create a transitional landscape. The building itself hovers between two layers of forest, one indoors, the other outdoors. Reflective annealed stainless steel elements blur the distinction between building and landscape that leads us to dream of faraway places and to learn. Rough and smooth, matt and shiny; the building offers children and visitors alike an ‘educational’ experience based on the five senses and using natural light without ever going over the top with colour....
