North Slope Ski Hotel

The North Slope Ski Hotel is a conceptual design proposal (in search of a client) for an eco-friendly ninety five room luxury hotel, which is powered primarily by the wind and by the sun. Eight large vertical axis wind turbines are mounted on the top of the hotel, and a very large array of flexible photovoltaic cells cover the lower south facing curved portion of the structure. These wind turbines and solar cells are used to supply most of the hotels electrical needs. The entire hotel is built from the most appropriate and sustainable building products available on the market. Large south facing insulated windows mounted in front of a large amount of thermal mass in the floor of the lobby, is used to help passively solar heat the hotel, al... More

The Cabin

Our design team was invited to rethink a ski resort apartment in Menuires, France. Located at the far end of a building built in 1965, it has triple orientation that was not valued by the previous layout which was too segmented. The request was to realize the impossible : increase the living space without touching the structure, create 2 bathrooms instead of the one existing, preserve the number of beds, 8 beds in 55m2, all while maintaining separate circultaions for each. To maximise the rather tight and constricted space, we chose to inverse the way of seeing it. Rather than trying to fit the furniture into the apartment, we decided to fit the apartment into the furniture ! However absurd this may seem, it immediately alleviated all th... More

Skipark 360°

The Swedish branch of C. F. Møller Architects, Berg Arkitektkontor, has designed Sweden's new, spectacular skiing attraction, Skipark 360°, the world's most com-plete indoor ski park with e.g. a 700 m long downhill slope and a drop of 160 m, making it the only indoor ski slope in the world to meet the requirements for host-ing the World Cup. At a height of approx. 135 m, it will be one of Sweden's largest buildings, and will become a landmark in the forest landscape just outside Stockholm. Construction of the ca. 1.5-2 billion Swedish kroner project is expected to start at the turn of 2013/2014. The idea for the Skipark 360° in Bålsta - 45 minutes outside of Stockholm - came about as this proud skiing nation has experienced reduced... More

Knoll Ridge Cafe

With the destruction of the original Knoll Ridge Chalet in February 2009, an ambitious design/construction programme was initiated to create temporary replacement facilities (café, toilets) for the 2009 winter season followed by the design and construction of a new café for the 2010 winter season. The simple lean-too structure of the temporary café building tested the construction process and the selection of materials facilitating the adoption of a similar methodology and material selection for the new café. The new café is located approximately 50m down the mountain from the original café site, with the main café floor at approximately 2010m ASL. The eastern face of the building is located on the edge of the drop off to the Te Heuheu Vall... More

Bergisel Ski Jump

In December 1999 Zaha Hadid Architects won the international competition for a new ski jump on the Bergisel Mountain in Innsbruck. The new structure opened in 2002. Situated on the Bergisel Mountain overlooking downtown Innsbruck, the ski jump is a major landmark. It is part of a larger refurbishment project for the Olympic Arena and replaces the old ski jump, which no longer met with international standards. The building is a hybrid of highly specialized sports facilities and public spaces, including a café and a viewing terrace. These different programs are combined into a single new shape, which extends the topography of the slope into the sky. At a length of about 90m and a height of almost 50m the building is a combination of a tower... More
