GFC country house

The project of Patricia Martinez Architecture Office is inspired by antique stables and elucidates contemporaneity. Inspired by the atmosphere of country houses, the GFC project is located in Larissa Farm, on a plot of 2,300 square meters. The house has wooden roof tiles and is distributed in three blocks of building: two lateral stone blocks connected by pergolas to a textured central block. Fran Parente The 600 square meters house grabs attention due to the external walls made of ashlar stone and the ceiling made in Brazilian oakwood, also known as Tauari wood. “The brief was to create a contemporary aesthetic at the same time as an atmosphere of country houses, inspired by old stables”, explains Patricia Martinez, CEO... Botha's Halte Primary School

The project entailed the development of a new Primary School, replacing the dilapidated Botha’s Halte farm school, in the Breede River Valley, for the Bosjes Trust. Although a privately sponsored project, the school is operated by the Western Cape Education Department. The new buildings provide a state-of-the-art facility for 250 rural primary school learners from a predominantly farm worker community. The buildings have been designed around sustainability principles, while respecting the cultural heritage of the area. A didactic design approach was followed, whereby these aspects are demonstrated throughout the complex as part of the teaching and educational processes.   The “Anna Zaal” (circa 1927), the first scho... Saltwater Farm

Sited near the pristine shoreline of Washington’s San Juan Island – an island only accessible by sea or air – lies Saltwater Farm at Friday Harbor, a stylish boutique hotel and rural retreat on 162 wild and beautiful acres. The project includes five small guest cabins and a two-story house for the clients and their two children.   The inn, farm, and family home are realizations of the couple’s longtime dream of leaving the city for a simpler life immersed in nature. After inviting the architects to camp on the land and explore the property, five small cabins were thoughtfully placed amidst towering pines to ensure solitude and privacy for guests. While the cabins are formally identical with a refined, Scandina... More

Santa Ynez Barn

The rehabilitated barn was adorned with a translucent structural composite that allows the outdoor light into the home and creates an illuminating, almost lantern-like effect at night. The home was built to accommodate long stays from guests including the home owners’ children and grandchildren and act as a “party house” that brought the outdoors in. This is well executed with the original structure of the barn with its large, sliding doors and hayloft. More

Farm Walik, Riethoven

National monumental farm Walik, a former cow and horse stable has been converted over the centuries into an inhabited farm. The exterior has little historical value due to the many changes and renovation, but the interior is largely intact. That is why, partly over the existing window openings, a new masonry shell and wooden slats are installed on the outside of the farm. A variant new window is added to the stone front. This gives a direct view on the surrounding landscape with the newly laid natural garden from the dining room. The morning sun comes in.   The spatial experience in the interior is central, while preserving the authentic elements such as the brick walls and the oak truss. The design of a large interior with open conn... More
