Gabion

The site is located in the midst of the mountain ranges. It has a 180 degree view of the beautiful mountains with a deep valley in front. The site has natural rock bed and we as architects, do not want to disturb the natural landform present. Also, The site already had a 6m deep land cut when we visited for the first time. We used that landform to bring out the structure with view towards the valley. Also the site has more rocks with a slope difference on an average of 2 to 4 m deep throughout the site. The project called for an addition and “re mapping“ of an existing 1960 residence on the upper bench of Salt Lake City. The design started with the landscape which grew out of the client’s art collection. The garden was organized around the idea of journey and repose. The end of the journey are two bronze elephants which are situated on a stainless-steel gabion filled with recycle glass and lite from below. The garden is only accessible from the house through the kitchen. The clients requested a spacious modern house that expressed its appreciation for outdoor living. An open plan and practical glass and steel house that lived out onto the garden was of utmost importance to them. The site is situated in a private game reserve/ eco estate. As the site sloped towards the street terraces were built with gabions, creating a feeling of enclosure towards the north side, with the Highveld savannah beyond it where game roams.
