Lake House

The house on the lake refers to the local boat and fishing houses and follows the tradition of rural construction by the water. Lightness, a low, wide roof structure and a strong emphasis on the horizontal determine the design. The timber construction, predominantly from local woods, is elevated to protect it from flood. The wooden porch surrounding the house widens to a terrace at the lakeside, completely covered by the steep saddleback roof. The vertical timber formwork of the facades is untreated, with wide glazing allowing generous views into the surroundings. Red Barn

Located on a coastal Connecticut estate, the Red Barn houses space for an artist on the first floor (a studio and workshop) as well as modern living accommodations on the second floor (a bedroom, bathroom, living and dining areas). Programmatic flexibility is a major component of the Barn’s design, as the first floor is highly reconfigurable. In stark counterpoint to the traditionalism of the estate, the building houses its functions in minimalist, graphic efficiency as it reinterprets a common New England building form. A continuous rainscreen encloses the entire profile of the dwelling and seamlessly blends a large foldaway door that allows access to the expansive space below. More

Shearwaters

Shearwaters is a replacement dwelling in the Pembrokeshire Town of Tenby. It is located on the southern side of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The site is located at a cliff top boasting panoramic views from Tenby to the west and the Bristol channel to the south. The brief was to create a contemporary 5-bedroom dwelling that was unique but complementing of the typical pitched roof vernacular of the area. The design developed out of a series of detailed studies into the local roof forms, pitches and relationships between geometries. The plan spreads east and west to the boundaries of the long and narrow site to maximise the size of the front and rear gardens. A ground floor form containing the dining and living spaces reaches out to th... More

Nevis Pool and Garden Pavilion

Located in a neighborhood bordering Washington, DC, this suburban site has the advantage of being located adjacent to woodlands. A contemporary house surrounded by mature trees and manicured gardens anchors the site. A new swimming pool, stone walls, and terraces located behind the existing house organize the rear yard and establishes a dialogue between the existing house and a new pavilion. New paths, trees and structured plantings reinforce the geometry. The new pavilion, intended for year round use, is strategically located to provide a threshold between the structured landscape and adjacent woodland. A low-pitched, terne coated stainless steel roof floats above a dry-stacked slate wall and mahogany volume. Five steel-framed gl... More

Becherer House

Rolling pastures, bordered with dark, stained fences interspersed in woodlands define the Albemarle County, Virginia countryside where this project is located. The new house is sited at the edge of woodland on the crest of a hill, providing vantage view points of the pastures and distant treetops. The house is conceived of three gable-roofed pavilions that provide a threshold between the woodlands and the pastures, taking advantage of two very different scenic panoramas. The one room deep, central living pavilion contains large expanses of glass along two walls, affording views of both the woods and rolling horse pastures. This configuration insures the space will be flooded with light at all times of the day throughout the year. A scr... More
