Silence and poetry were the guidelines for the design of this small craft building, built in the region of the Reggio Emilia hills Apennines. Design silence is not lacking in a creative sound, but my communes are the most common, the most common from a simple logic of economy and their poetry is added to a design attitude of listening rather than of preveration. One discovers the soul of matter to redeem it from a condition of banality that becomes the intent of the project. How to make great a small business almost sewed to the ground, bound by a thousand urban constraints, by the laces and the straps imposed by the presence, once cumbersome, of the neighbors who live a few meters away?Only 110 square meters in plan, un imperative: to find the right size and the indispensable privacy, a fundamental condition for living at home. On the hills of central Italy, a house 60s with an attached craft activity is transformed by the recent restructuring in a family house. A large marble base on which has been reassembled the whole construction. Scenes that go beyond the large base to extend the surrounding terrain and communicate with it. The materials that alternate are: cotto facing in dividing walls, glass mosaic columns, copper in finishes and coverings, marble and brick on prospectuses. It is “polite architecture” in the historic center of a medieval town, a major restructuring that takes a contemporary language, while continuing to communicate with the historic location. The main facade is decorated with a backdrop and holding up the stairwell outside main entrance: a giant slab of marble structured and supported with stainless steel and carved with a decoration laser to get a good transparency. The scale is purposely distanced from architecture thanks to steel spacers that hold the step in monolithic marble, accentuated by the lighting system that highlights also the perforations of the backdrop. A restructuring that takes life from the roots of the building: a symbiosis between the different elements and an inspiration to the basic lines makes the project a harmonious blend of materials and shapes. First floor stands out as the bough of a tree differs from the trunk, solid and massive, represented here by the ground floor of the building, entirely covered by stone. An overlap of the volumes and interlacing of lines differ the upper part from the lower. The first is developed vertically, thanks to the precise lines and sparse openings and the second is connected to the ground with the horizontal, fragmentary lines and discontinuous material. An old gas station on the boundaries of the city to distribute fuel after a long journey or for who had to leave for somewhere. A skinny architecture, transformed into a macro advertising signs. Still performing its function as a distributor, no more fuel, but of poetry and emotions. The renovated building is located in the city of Reggio Emilia, on the main traffic street of the city, in a residential area. This area has the connotation of commercial axis, over time has become an urban fabric for the relationship between citizens.
