Dubai Opera

Dubai Opera is a truly unique venue and the emirate’s first purpose built multi-format performing arts theatre situated in the heart of Downtown Dubai. Designed by Janus Rostock of Atkins, Dubai Opera resembles a traditional dhow boat and all elements of the interior and exterior are in keeping with the heritage of Dubai which revolves largely around the water-based industries such as fishing and pearl fishing. In keeping with the design is a stunning new creation from LASVIT which will greet guests as they enter Dubai Opera. The dynamically-lit glass sculpture titled Symphony by LASVIT will span three floors of the main atrium and like the building itself, the sculpture was inspired by the element of water and Dubai’s maritime past.... Holmenkollen Ski Jump

The Holmenkollen hill plays a significant part identifying Oslo. In the Oslo panorama its characteristic profile is a clear icon, up close its majestic steepness rises towards the sky, making heads tilt and from the top, the panorama view towards the fjord are fantastic. It is a building beyond conventions, and it is no wonder that it is one of Oslo’s most visited tourist attractions. To create a new slope on the soil of the old requires full awareness of its traditions. The new Holmenkollen Beacon is extending tradition… to the sky! In emphasizing the existing landmark's values, it strives to keep the fine balance between majestic and simple, while introducing contemporary materials and design. Conceptually the project works wi... More

Luna

It has inspired a dedicated fan web-site, generations of fancy-dress costumes and countless YouTube tribute videos, and now a building. That’s right, Luna, Elenberg Fraser’s new four storey residential project on Barkly St, St Kilda, is based on Princess Leia’s infamous ‘dancing girl’ gold bikini, featured in Star Wars, Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. While Luna’s curvaceous form echoes the draping lines of Leia’s usual white robes, the shimmering gold glass and metal mesh materials are matched perfectly with the colours and textures of the gold brassiere. Callum says that 'the science of the building is the science of perception'. The metallic skin seems almost intangible, hovering between reality and fantasy – a comment on the tension be... More

Arganzuela Footbridge

The burying underground of the highway that ran along the river banks of the Manzanares river provided the opportunity to openup a new urban territory to the inhabitants of Madrid: the Manzanares Park. A series of bridges over the river will allow crossing from oneside of the park to the other. Designed to link the neighborhoods on the right and left banks of the river, the Arganzuela Footbridge will be thelongest of all the bridges to be built. The bridge will be for both pedestrians and cyclists. The footbridge enables people to cross from one sideof the park to the other and gives also direct access to the park below. Cone like in structure, the bridge has two interlocking metal spirals, wrapped by a metallic ribbon. Spaced wooden slats m... More

Torre Europa

The project develops a residential tower at Plaza de Europa in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat as part of a larger development that includes other towers of similar characteristics. The concept deals with a well defined volume, based on an extruded square of 27.33 x 27.33 meters with its main facade facing Plaza de Europa. The east, south and west facades are shaped by horizontal planes that house the private terraces, while on the north facade those terraces are integrated within the perimeter of the volume. The 19 floors develop a total of 101 units with a variety of 2, 3, and 4 bedrooms, organized around a central core. On the ground floor the common areas are arranged: gymnasium and pool. The visual connection between the common areas and... More

Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

L35, one of the largest architectural firms in Spain, in partnership with GMP Architekten, the worlds nº1 stadium specialist, and Ribas&Ribas a hotel specialist architectural firm, has been selected by the Real Madrids board of directors to remodel the iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.   Although the new envelope is shaped freely, its geometry is not accidental. The curved volumes are able to reflect light in a changing way, its marked lines expressing energy and drive.   While visually dominating its surroundings, the stadium volume is adapted to the program behind it, swelling or shrinking without losing unity or character. The ventilated cladding material is designed to allow or to block sunlight through its changing pattern. The ski... More

Gem Building

The Gem Building is a unique small-scale landmark surrounded by large buildings in King Abdullah Financial District. The size of the building is adapted to human scale and its crystalline form and faceted facades enhance its quality as a shining beacon. The Gem has a mixed-use programme: three separate buildings include a residential block, an office block and a multi-purpose podium with a terrace overlooking the garden - this is linked to the green pedestrian thoroughfare of the district. The cluster of gems creates spaces for fluid, flexible circulation around and through the buildings. As a small-scale icon, the form and intimate scale of the building provide a unique destination and meeting place; the facades enhance the express... More

Empire Riverside Hotel

The Empire Riverside Hotel and the “Brauhaus”, an office and business complex, is located in the centre of Hamburg on industrial land formerly occupied by the Bavaria brewery. The buildings lie between two widely divergent areas of the city: to the east are striking townhouses, commercial buildings and banks, and to the north and west, provincial St Pauli with its preponderance of four- and five-storey buildings built in the 19th century. Both the facade and the interior were designed by Berlin-based David Chipperfield Architects. The building complex is made up of three structures: The 327-room hotel consists of a tower over an L-shaped low-rise section which is adjacent to the “Brauhaus”. The space between the Brauhaus and the low-rise par... More

Museum of Islamic Art

QATAR – “If we really want people to come here and stay for a while, then we need to make room for them and offer them interesting routes through the rooms,” notes the Chinese-American star architect, Ieoh Ming Pei. Here, he is referring to his latest project: the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar’s capital city Doha. It is the only one of its kind in the Arabic World and officially opened on December 1, 2008. Pei positioned the building in a highly-visible location on an artificial island in the bay, approximately 60 meters into the sea. The main building is nearly windowless. This means that the 5,000 square meters of exhibit halls go without incident natural daylight. This is for conservation reasons. And exactly where SCHOTT comes into... More
