Maison de la Mer : A Landscape-Oriented Architecture Conceived as a Public Park
Located at the heart of the harbour on the site of the former marina car park, this integrated architectural and landscape development restructures the public realm to provide residents and visitors with a new public park and a new focal point, celebrating the coastline, the marine park and the Massane Forest.
A landscaped esplanade, featuring a marine-themed play area, a zip line and spaces for relaxation, enlivens the central promenade and naturally guides pedestrian and cycle routes towards the Maison de la Mer and its educational rooftop trail. Sitting directly adjacent to Sydney Harbour and private beach, the site is marked by a dramatic change in level from street to the lowest level, through a narrow panel, and exaggerated slot harbour views. Overlooking the site to the north is an oversized building that blocks the sun. The neighbouring buildings to the east are also substantially higher and overlook the rear of the site.

Chicago
A narrow spit of land between the eastern bank of the IJ, the railway embankment and the Piet Heinkade was part of the redevelopment of the eastern harbour area by the Amsterdam Department of Urban Planning (DRO) in the 1990s. The urban development concept included a series of interconnected building zones. In this so-called ‘train of buildings’, a part of the old warehouses was to be preserved and integrated into the planning.
