Community Center Edegem: Symbol of sustainable design reactivates a redundant site in a historic town

Located south of Antwerp in the village of Edegem, Community Center Edegem by Mark Koehler Architects is constructed entirely of massive timber (CLT). Multifunctional, flexible, and open, the project sits in harmonious integration with the existing monumental Huis Hellemens Exhibition Centre and its gardens. Project goals include reactivating a redundant site in the heart of the historic town and creating a symbol of sustainable design. Lilyfield House is a spatial assembly of internal and external rooms and volumes, opening to the light, to green spaces and rising to the district outlook. The rooms and platforms of the house pviot around a central atrium, integrating portions of a historic shop.   Accessible from only two sides and subject to acoustic constraints under a flight path, these 3-storey alterations and additions cater for family living and working from home. The current trend in The Netherlands is to recycle existing buildings rather than to replace them. In the old city of Leiden Mirck Architecture has designed such a rejuvenation for a 15th century landmark canal house. In the 1960s the building’s interior was effectively destroyed, which sad event opened interesting perspectives for the building’s redevelopment.
