Detail: hempcrete facade of town hall Voorst
For the reconstruction of the town hall of Voorst, in the forested countryside of eastern Netherlands, architecture office De Twee Snoeken developed a hempcrete facade made from the stalks of regionally harvested plants. It’s among the largest applications of the biobased material in the region.

It is perhaps obvious that a municipal building should be constructed from regional materials. But, for many reasons, it is too rarely the case. When the city of Voorst, the Netherlands, issued an invitation to tender for the demolition and reconstruction of its existing city hall built in the 1980s, it required that the new project be a landmark of sustainability. ‘Hemp, Lime and Marés House’ by IDEO arquitectura finds inspiration in the use of natural building materials
A place for experimentation and testing, the ‘Hemp, Lime and Marés House,’ as it has been named by IDEO arquitectura, is inspired by the use of natural materials in building design. Located on the south island of Mallorca, the house features rubble generated by the work itself, the reuse and recycling of finishes such as flooring, tiling, doors, new materials from companies based locally on the island, along with hemp, lime plaster, and marés block.

The future of architecture through 10 biobased materials
As more architects, and their clients, prioritize sustainability goals and the connection to site and history, biobased materials are being more frequently used to create buildings around the globe. These materials, viewed through the lens of contemporary architecture, are creating distinctive structures that lean on the past but are decidedly of the moment. From timber frames to biobased plastics, these elements are creating new spaces that will help define the trajectory of architecture for years to come. Encompassing exhibition spaces, private homes, and more, 10 examples show us where this attention to natural materials may take architecture in the coming decades.

Maison Gauthier
Context and setting
La Maison Gauthier is located in the Laurentians, in Quebec, near the town of Mont-Tremblant. It is set in a hilly terrain and is surrounded by a dense expanse of forest characteristic of this mountainous region.
The lot is located on a rocky hill covered with spruce and birch. It is bounded to the east by the main road and to the west by the owners’ horse farm. The clients wanted a volume with views largely oriented towards the horses’ riding arena below. At the same time, they wanted to take advantage of the intimacy created by the topography of the lot.
The forested berm between the road and house creates a visual filter, allowing a sequential progression towards the building. The volume i... More
