Located in São Francisco Xavier, a district of São José dos Campos, Casa Quetzal is set within the landscape of the Serra da Mantiqueira, surrounded by Atlantic Forest and the characteristics of the region’s rural architecture. Designed by Sertão Arquitetos as a renovation of a 105 m² residence, the project completely reorganizes the interior spaces to meet the needs of its new inhabitants while preserving the language of the existing building and strengthening its relationship with the surrounding landscape. This former chalet was transformed into an airy house, whereby the volume of the extension was adapted to the positioning of the existing oak trees. The structure is made of steel and finished with black-oiled wooden cladding and a gold anodised facade. Maintaining a holiday feeling, opening up to the garden as much as possible, as well as creating a captivating spaciousness through the expanding roof shape in contrast to the limited ceiling heights of the existing parts. Tucked away within the picturesque landscape of Quebec’s Eastern Townships, Sutton House stands as a complete overhaul and extension of an early 20th century stone house. Originally built in 1908 and modestly expanded in the 1950s, the house had remained largely unaltered since. With its heavy walls, hulking geometry, and oversized chimneys it bore the characteristics of a smallish manor rather than a traditional country home. This project was for one of our long-term vendors, who is also the younger brother of our design director Jyue and someone he has known since childhood. After recently getting married, he purchased an older townhouse. By adjusting the layout and introducing natural light, we transformed the space from dark and stagnant to bright and open. This renovation reflects the couple's ideal lifestyle, making this old home a space that will carry their happiness into the future. Our clients wanted to improve their existing traditional Victorian terrace house by adding a rear extension, refurbishment and reconfiguration of the traditional plan.
