In 1965, Edward Durell Stone was commissioned by A&P heir Huntington Hartford to design a Gallery of Modern Art on a prominent site on New York City's Columbus Circle. Forty years later, AlliedWorks of Portland, Oregon, led by architect Brad Cloepfil, was hired by a very different organization to revamp Stone's controversial but important building for the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD). While Stone clad his building with creamy white marble panels, 2 Columbus Circle was better known for its signature of portholes and arcades. The KFC YUM! Center is a 721,762 square foot arena in downtown Louisville, Kentucky featuring dramatic, rolling ceilings through massive expanses of glass windows. For an iconic streetscape and a 10,000 square foot grand lobby ceiling that emulates the adjacent Ohio River, our large format, Curved Torsion Spring ceiling system was selected with a maple finish. The geometry, ceiling height and perpetual undulations, waves and tapers required engineering interpolation and installer's extrapolation to construct geometry into reality. The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University Vietnam is an Australian-based University operating in Vietnam on two separate campuses. The bold new Academic Building 2 (AB2) is the most recent addition to their Ho Chi Minh campus. Over 1000 people from around the world, including designers, architects, engineers, construction workers took part in this project. Chef Charlie Palmer's flagship restaurant, Aureole, opened its doors in 1988 on the Upper East Side of New York City with a commitment to farm fresh food and "Progressive American" cuisine. Its immense success led to 12 subsequent restaurants by the world-renowned Chef and the demand for a much larger seating area. Architects at Gould Evans had just such an opportunity for the second of four buildings that make up Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute. The building's north façade, an entry point for the entire research complex, lies on what will become a major pedestrian path, framing a mall with connections to a light rail station. After many believed the school would not reopen, Landry High School was chosen by The Federal Emergency Management Agency, Louisiana Recovery Authority and Recovery School District to receive funding and grants to rebuild the school. The Kunming Changshui International Airport is the fourth addition to Chinese national level air hubs that link China with South and Southeast Asia, and Asia with Europe. This 548,000 m2 hub features 84 parking bays for air crafts and is expected to have flown 38 million passengers by 2020 and 65 million by 2040. Due to the design of the building’s elaborate cornices, architects at the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design required a durable and customizable facade that would also provide insulation to the large airport terminal.
