Student Hostel

For many people, the time they spend as students in a hostel is a source of some of their most unforgettable memories. This is a period of life tinged with friendship and loneliness, with forging new friends and missing home, the excitement of fresh knowledge and a sense of new found independence. The hostel buildings are designed with a sensitivity to this unique experience that sets them apart from other building types. The hostels are part of the large campus of a the newly established Y V University, located in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, India. The project is located in a context characterized by state patronage with limited construction technologies and a spartan budget. The design approach consciously engages with the architectural legacy... More

The Tote

A series of disused buildings from Mumbai’s colonial past set within the Mumbai Race Course are to be converted to form a series of restaurant and bars. The conservation guidelines call for the preservation of the roof profile for three-quarters of the buildings and full conservation for the remaining one-quarter. The interesting aspect of the site, however, lies not in the colonial buildings but in the open spaces covered by mature Rain Trees. These spaces are shaded throughout the year by the thinly wide spread leaves of the Rain Trees, allowing almost the entire proposed program to occur outdoors. Our proposal attempts to continue this idea of a continuously differentiated space, with no clear boundary, into the envelope of the con... More

Indigo Deli @ Palladium

Designed by mumbai-based firm sameeppadora and associates, the 'indigo deli', a delicatessen and dine-in restaurant transforms a mundane retail space within the palladium mall in mumbai, india. Denying the rigid geometries of the mall context, an undulating and interlocking structure swoops above the tables within the dining area. Combining the physicality of a dome and surface, the hybrid form employs the structural strengths of both applications. The wooden armature is formed with rough textured plywood, contrasting the sleek copper lighting fixtures and built in details. The design-build project began as a parametric exploration during the design process. Manufacturing of the unique sections began with CNC routing and systematic... More

Alila

The hotel and its facilities occupy the first five storeys, with a lounge, and public restaurants at ground floor level opening onto the surrounding landscaped gardens. The upper floors contain fourteen apartments; a range of single level, duplex and penthouse units. All have continuous balconies on three sides and generous terraces for indoor/outdoor living. Both hotel and apartments have impressive views south over Lake Varthur. Many of the interior design finishes (in-situ polished terrazzo, polished cement plaster wall finishes, custom made furniture, light fittings and accessories) focus on the revival of carft traditions and skilled fabrication. The interiors are subtle augmented by the flourishes of the craftsmanship. More

Polyclinic for the destitute

In the heart of the old city of Delhi, on the edge of the railway line, sandwiched between a masjid and remains of a burnt slum, a modern Polyclinic for the poorest of the poor has been built for the drug addicts, TB patients and the HIV positive people who live on the pavements of Lahori Gate. Castro Cafe

DESIGN CONCEPT A Cafeteria in a University Campus located near Auditorium, Cultural Center, Mass communication, was expected to become hub of all social activities of the Campus. Due to the extreme climatic conditions of New Delhi, where the summer sees temperatures of above 45 degrees centigrade, and the winters often see temperatures below 5 degree centigrade. Most student canteens in India are not air-conditioned, and are often poorly ventilated, making them very hot and oppressive in the summer and very cold in the winters. This canteen was proposed as a ‘Semi open air Café’. This allowed to have an ambient temperature for most of the year along with good ventilation, and a variety of degrees of shade from the climate.... More

Veer Savarkar Sports Complex

Veer Sawarkar Sports Complex is located in the eastern part of Ahmedabad, which is largely an industrial area with defunct textile mills. An initiative to propel development in the area, resulted in the building of civic services of which this complex is one. Going to the site, we felt that the vision of the project could not be complete by just providing a few sporting arenas. It had to come together as something more inclusive for the larger community. The program eventually included a children’s crèche, a restaurant, a library, an internet café, an auditorium, some conferencing, an amphitheatre and a public garden. The project thus, posits itself between a formal institution and an urban public space with all its relevant elements of sea... More

Mewar Complex

The Mewar Complex is intended to resonate with the qualities of the life of the legendary king of Rajasthan, Rana Pratap. Designed to commemorate the brave, frugal and hard life of the Rana, the project also projected his strength. Symbolic of his rebellion, as architects, we resisted the making of the memorials and tourism facilities to become pastiche and clichés of a ‘Rajasthani’ architecture, replete with battle scenes, chattris, walls with crenellations, jharookhas. On the contrary, the textured walls rose like the Rana, battle marked and hardened, rough and strong. Thus, a texture of large and small pieces that resonates with the tones of the hills and mountains around is created. It is reminiscent of the rugged terrain of the battlef... More

Ghar unjha

The ghar in Unjha was designed for a client who wanted a private, introspective home. The building works to mitigate northern Gujarat’s harsh climate through a second skin that envelopes the entire space. Alternating stone panels compress the prevailing wind, creating a breeze that crosses the house, while a two foot ventilated gap between exterior and interior surface removes heat emitted by the sun-baked outside walls. The protective, tall wrapper allows the building to open into a central green chowk around which rooms are situated, structured by a ramp that runs along the western wall. A first floor terrace above the living room provides space for pulse and pickle and papad sun-drying, keeping all household activities connected... More

L House

Located at the corner of three adjoining plots, this house rises from the ground, each plinth turning as it moves up, creating a volume that spirals from lotus pond to pool deck to living space to planted roof. The family and their guests enter from below, crossing the pond and climbing past the pool to a verandah adjacent to the main living space. While this is perched above the deck, the rooms sink below, windows peaking out just at the floor level to see feet fly by. More

Shiv Temple

Designed in dialogue with the priest and the people from surrounding villages the temple design is a collaborative effort. Built through ‘Shramdaan’ (self-build) by the villagers, this temple was constructed on a shoestring budget. Using a local basalt stone as a primary building block, because of its availability from a quarry within 200 meters from the temple site The stone’s patina that seems to confer age, as if the temple had always existed... before inhabitation. In realizing the temple design in close consultation with the temple priest & the villagers, we attempted to sieve out through discussion & sketches the decorative components from the symbolic. Adhering to the planning logic of traditional temple architecture, the f... More

SHIPARA

Shipara is a new office building tucked into a tight urban site with overbearing buildings on three sides. The front edge faces a lush park in liberating contrast. The programmatic functions are organized on alternating split levels. A circulation spiral orchestrates movement within the volume and links the various staff and management zones. Façade and roof apertures are strategically located to force natural light through, and swerve in different directions to capture defined views of foliage and tree-tops. While much of the building’s expression is derived from an articulated internal experience, its perched form is further emphasized by a recessed, arched base. We imagined a muted material palette for Shipara; and only colored gl... More

Ingadi - Private Retreat in the South-Indian Countryside

The client’s brief was rather precise: to create a fairytale. A 4000sqm compound has been turned into an interior world consisting of 3 houses, pool with pavilion, small forest, rock – tropical - and suspended gardens, sunken garden around a deep well, outdoor bathrooms, savanna and water-tank all of it assembled to provide views on the nearby holy mountain and yet creating privacy in its different indoor and outdoor spaces. Sloping roof-gardens provide natural connectivity from the living quarters on the first floors down to the common spaces on the ground-floor and the visitor discovers a new space or a new vista around every corner. The buildings draw on traditional construction technique combined with large Roof-overhangs and hig... More
