This semi-detached house borders a busy road in Brussels. The nuisances of this were all the more noticeable in the living room, as a set of annexes interposed itself with the garden and obstructed natural light. The house is located on the border that separates a suburban development of single-family houses and a protected forest area. The main strategy followed in the project is to let the house take advantage of this special location and make the most of its double condition by merging them both; the wild nature of the forest on the one hand and the built or suburban environment on the other. The Site  As hillside design specialists, the Whipple Russell team sometimes finds it necessary to move mountains – or at least part of one, in order to create a spacious yet intimate modern home. To accomplish these goals for our Hutton house, we first cut into the rear hillside to maximize backyard living space and to site the house further from the street in the front. At the back of the property two porcelain stone retaining walls create a balcony lounge area with a fire pit and greenery overlooking the saltwater pool, spa, and the entire property including multiple firepits, and an outdoor kitchen/bar. Inspired by the fantastic view, the architectural plans for this home included a roof top deck.  The homeowners objective was to build vertically to make the most use of their real estate and take advantage of the scenery. To protect the investment into their new home, they needed flat roof waterproofing they could depend on. To most enjoy their new flat roof deck, they wanted something attractive and low maintenance. We were inspired to create our first authentic living space to reflect our client’s desire to live and work in his painting studio. The design emulates his painting style and personal lifestyle by using natural materials, minimalist values, and bridging social context within a live-work environment. The overall form takes on an ethos of monumental simplicity which inherently captures panoramic lake views from the steep mountainside terrain. ​ As part of authentic living, this studio is entirely devoid of added paints or stains. The Wirrig outdoor living space is an absolute masterpiece. Large timbers, a massive hearth, and wide open areas are perfect for parties, weddings, or any outdoor event that needs a special venue. The idea for it came to the property owners one starry night - literally: One night, the property owner and some friends jumped in his newly purchased old 1966 Ford pickup truck, and drove around the Ohio property, which has fields and woods. Through a detailed prototyping exercise prior to engaging on the design of the recently opened Marin and Walnut Creek locations, BCV collaborated with the Gott’s team in creating these exciting new restaurants under the tagline ‘roadside redefined.’ At Walnut Creek, BCV worked to capture the essence of the traditional roadside legacy of the original St. Helena outlet, including a focus on opening the space to the outside and creating a true indoor/outdoor experience– a hallmark of the Gott’s heritage.
