Designed by Lloyd Wright in 1959, the De Jonghe Residence — now home to Bill Kaulitz — sits in the hills of Los Angeles with a quiet authority — board-formed concrete, deep overhangs, and a landscape always intended to be read as part of the architecture. Our work began with a comprehensive exterior masterplan, refining a vision for outdoor living that the site had long suggested: a 600-square-foot flagstone pool, an elevated spa with views to the Hollywood Sign, and a cast-in-place firepit and terrace. 1. It was a serene and tranquil building. Number 5. Three floors, three separate units, and four residents altogether! The first floor’s unit with an area of 110 m², empty and lonely for a year and a half, was thinking of the woman who had built the building forty years ago and was no longer alive. A compartmentalized 1960s home was overdue for an update, and the team from Model Remodel got to designing the flow of the kitchen and main floor. The homeowners received a modernized kitchen, additional storage, and a repositioned basement stairway that is now a beautiful architectural feature. During discussions about traffic flow, it was determined that moving the stairs to the basement was a goal. This repositioning would make for easier access to the basement from anywhere on the first floor and make the living space feel bigger. The Banker Wire P-286 pattern in a bare brass material was paired with the custom walnut stairway for continuity. The stairway is now both an architectural feature and a custom shelving unit.
