Shell House - Kuwait

At the heart of Shell House lies an intimate, lush courtyard and pool which can be viewed from both the home gym and living areas on the ground floor. The upper floors rotate around the garden, which acts as an anchor and pivot point, with pockets of greenery reverberating throughout the house. On the first floor, the master bedroom is oriented to allow views of the courtyard below, while also providing shading for the garden seating. The rotational staggering of the floors in Shell House breaks an otherwise monotonous reading of the house. Each floor is rotated in such a way so as to offer privacy not only from the neighbors, but also from other zones in the house, creating pockets of privacy throughout the home. Every decision in Shell... More

Reborn House

Reborn House is a seaside property in Bidaa, Kuwait. With the western elevation facing a busy street, we opted to carve a series of openings out of the main mass. Cuts were made at acute angles and the windows were set within a slight tilt. By partially masking the windows, we were able to create shadows that minimize solar heat gain while allowing for diffused light to enter the house. On the other hand, the eastern elevation (facing the sea) benefits from deep set openings and balconies that maximize both views and shade. When the client first approached us, the initial foundation had already been laid out before they decided to change the design. The general spatial configuration from the previous design had to be retained for the organ... More

KFAS Headquarter and Conference Center

Plasma Studio project aims at proposing a woven strategy, where the urban proposal is punctuated by several instances with higher architectural resolution and within which the KFAS headquarters and the conference center are understood as two attractor poles, pulling and articulating pedestrian flows in between. The urban design concept is based on recomposing and connecting, whilst fostering key moments from within which future growth can occur.  We conceptualize this urban fabric as a tissue in need of further material definition to generate a strong identity; its own character informed by both, the architectural instances (de)marking places on the one hand and the movement of pedestrians, which in due time will lend itself to addition... Nirvana Home

There are no words to define the concept of Nirvana, a mental state with effects in the physical and spiritual planes. This makes it difficult to explain and only those who practice meditation can understand how far they are from reaching it. These thoughts led us to name this project Nirvana. Words like “house”, “villa”, or “palace” fail to represent the scale of the building, its materialisation, or its spatial order. We prefer the term “home”. The features of a home are not physical, but rather emotional and affective, and Nirvana Home has been designed and built to satisfy the needs of the inhabitants in these terms. This home is also a reflection of the culture within which it is developed. In this sense, its point of contact with the... More

AB Workspace

In a central location among 3 Lebanese districts, AB architects placed its mobile workspace cabin to be within reach and close contact with their diverse client base of different backgrounds and localities. The 22 m2 cabin situated in a fairly rural area on the main highway, it stands as an urban form in contrast to its surroundings. It consists of the main metallic desk and a high-end setting area, a mini enclosed kitchen, toilet, at the ground level, and a rooftop function as a terrace with views of a panoramic nature and storage space and water tank.  The cabin was designed to self-manage energy and renewables (natural resources) in an efficient manner. It self-stores rainwater to then re-use it for its multiple functions. With a str... More

NINO RESTAURANT

Introducing itself to the local market in the early 90's, Nino has developed a reputation for its sleek and funky interiors. ArchJS was provided the task of rebranding and redesigning Nino's future branches to meet the contemporary market today. The newest updated flagship restaurant is located in Arabella Complex, Kuwait. It is divided into two floors and contains outdoor seating with a view of the Gulf Sea. New materials and lighting methods are introduced to this concept while preserving Nino's original brand identity. Transparent concrete is a dominant material applied within this interior. It is used t... More

Star House

Nestled into the landscape, this beach house blends with the natural topography of the coastline of Kuwait. It slowly unfolds itself to the visitor, as it is approached from the desert. Upon entry, one gets glimpses of the sea whilst going down to the public space of the chalet. On this lower level, the house extends into the landscape and the sea, accentuated by an infinity pool in the garden. The private side of the house, located at the entry level, is concealed from the visitors by a bamboo wall. Bedrooms and private living spaces remain isolated from daily activities. A three-way stair, placed at the center of building, organizes the different flows of family, friends and guests. Maximising views to the sea dictates the organi... More

Black & White House

These six houses on three adjacent plots should be noticed for their bold black and white facade with far from being a decorative element reveals the very nature of this project. Not a solid block but a labyrinth of outer spaces communicated with the dark stone cladding ribbon flowing from one to the other in 3 directions and provide natural light and cross ventilation in the houses at different levels. Located on a main highway in Kuwait, the houses differentiate themselves from their surroundings by their stark façade design. With two contrasting colours, the façade is designed to define the individual houses, while achieving unity amongst all six. White stucco material is used as the base for all the houses, while dark grey bands of st... More
