A coffee shop from Kyoto, renowned for its attention to detail, has inspired the creation of a new café that emphasizes atmosphere with a Japanese touch. The design incorporates Gami paper and the narrative of filter coffee-making. Because the building has an almost triangular shape, the space required careful planning and adjustments. This is a renovation project in a quiet residential area in Kyoto. The client requested a space where people can physically enjoy wine and music, and also wanted to use speakers that they have a strong emotional attachment to, so I decided to take those speakers as the main part of this project. It is a house renovation for couple specializing in painting and design and their child.We aimed for a space where production activities, daily life, a little exhibition can coexist. The space consists of three layers. This residence is a renovated Kyo-machiya built 95 years ago, near Kinkakuji Temple. Nishijin was once lined with workshops and residences for textile craftsmen, and this Machiya was one of them. In addition, the client works remotely from his home. In a sense, this combination of work and home, which has been increasing in recent years, represents an everyday culture that is deeply rooted in the history of Nishijin and Machiya. Here, on Showa Koji in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, row houses built before World War II stand on both sides of the alley. This was an interior design completed after the design for Abeno Harukas shop and Sogo Kobe by Yagyug Douguten. It is located in the underground shopping center of Kyoto Station, “Kotochika Kyoto” where many tourists come to visit, not to mention many visitors from foreign countries in recent years. For this shop, a seating area was also provided so that freshly baked cheese tarts can be enjoyed with Japanese tea unique to Kyoto. The aroma and astringency of the tea pairs well with the sweet cheese tart. It creates a round and rich flavor melting together inside the mouth. This is a renovation project for more than 90 year old row houses with the aim of a healthy society in a dense urban area in Kyoto. In this project, I try to re-connect the gap related to the three elements, namely town, houses, and people.The first is revitalizing the connection between the past and future of the town by restring the façade and the own architecturally characteristic elements of the row houses. This is a chapel and christian cultural center at Doshisha University in Kyotanabe, Kyoto Japan. University hopes this facilities become symbol of Doshisha University insisting "Basic moral education by Christianity" and is handed down for 100 years, 200 years at Kyotanabe campus. We hope student at kyotanabe campus feel to study at Christial university by watching and using these facilities.We also hope these buildings will be told in graduates in memories. This is a renovation for a retiring couple to return to the former house of the wife’s parents in urban area of Kyoto, so-called “eel bed” (meaning narrow width and long depth in Kyoto). I designed it by two methods. The first is drastically reducing the floor space (as a result, the total became about 60㎡.) and inserting spot gardens to the outdoor space created by the reduction. The second is installing architectural wisdom of traditional urban houses in Kyoto. Namely, they are spot garden, sliding door made of paper, wooden vertical louver, and finishing by plaster. After this renovation, this house became just right size for the two and comfortable for them to feel delicate changes in nature. More
