Wingline Oasis

In the relentless verticality of the modern metropolis, the balcony is frequently relegated to the status of an architectural afterthought—a neglected, utilitarian sliver of weathered concrete clinging to the side of a glass monolith. Yet, for the contemporary city dweller, these few square meters represent the final frontier of personal sanctuary. In our practice, we view these compact outdoor volumes not as peripheral appendages, but as the most potent opportunities for architectural soul-searching. This project stands as a definitive testament to the "tiny but transformative," a surgical intervention within the urban fabric that has yielded a humongous impact on a family’s daily ritual of rejuvenation. Contemporary Japanese Garden Design In The Country

Joining forces with the clients for a third time, following a rooftop garden at their Barbican penthouse apartment and bespoke containers in their country home, we commenced this cultural pilgrimage to design & build a modern Japanese garden in Essex. Returning from a holiday in Japan, mesmerised by its unique gardens, the clients sought to develop a contemporary interpretation. With a 220 sqm sheltered courtyard in their 5-hectare acreage, the site was mechanically cleared for a new, inventive, modern Japanese landscape design. Clerkenwell Roof Garden

Our first biodiverse roof garden way back in summer 2014 was driven by two major factors: the lack of greenery in the street beneath, and the clients’ adoration in their countryside garden. Perched above the junction of Old Street & Goswell Road in trendy Clerkenwell EC1, the rooftop garden is oblong, spanning a 20-metre length x 3 metres. We created a sibling rooftop on the top level of this duplex penthouse to grow fruit & vegetables. To alleviate this oblongness, we designed 3 zones defined by surface changes from decking to sandstone and grass. Each area features its own planting style: the deck has shrubs, the stone herbs and the grass native trees. Marianne Majerus With 70 plant species, biodiversity is extensive... More
