Primary school in Au, Austria by Bernardo Bader Architekten recalls traditional approach to building in wood
Austrian architectural studio Bernardo Bader Architekten has completed a new primary school in Au, a town in the Bregenzerwald region of Vorarlberg, Austria. The school’s design and construction recalls the region’s traditional approach to building in wood.

Au has a valued history of craftsmanship. The “Auer Zunft” (Auer Guild), an association of Vorarlberg construction craftsmen, was established in 1651 and continued until 1842. Vudafieri-Saverino craft Austrian-Alps inspired interiors for Snohetta-designed five-star hotel
Nestled amongst forests and peaks of a protected area of the Montafon valley in Austria, Falkensteiner Hotel, a sustainability and family-focused five-star hotel, recently opened its doors to the public. The Snohetta-designed architecture is enriched by the interior design of Milan-based firm Vudafieri-Saverino Partners.

An expression of the traditions, colours and atmosphere of the Austrian Alps, the hotel is spread across four levels, taking advantage of the natural topography of the sloped site. Two distinct structures branch out from a central nucleus comprising communal areas.

Homes in the Pastures (Le Case del Prato)
“I welcomed the idea of building the two Case del Prato using the timber felled by the storm. The wounds produced by storm Vaia are still visible when you look around Zirmerhof and you see the empty patches of woodland. We still find it hard to believe how violent the wind of Vaia was, and how it could fell and carry away so many trees. Yet the message that Vaia left us is quite clear. It is a message that comes from a tale of climate change and that shows us how nature is rebelling against our inconsiderate actions, against those anthropogenic changes that are far from natural.” (Michele De Lucchi, june 2020)

Earthy, simplicity… these are the first two words which the clients pronounced during our first meeting as fundaments of the inspirational concept leading the project of their Mediterranean house in Italy. And it was suddenly reciprocal love. Others words we used were: open space, integration, solidity , continuity , natural, easy, sustainable and environmental friendly. The context: an existent private house with garden and swimming pool of about 200 sq.m with a fantastic view and natural environment on the extreme western Ligurian coast, at about 6 km to the French border and the Côte d’Azur.
