Urban plan for Oostenburg in Amsterdam’s city center combines industrial heritage with urban density
The artificial island of Oostenburg is the final large-scale development in Amsterdam’s city center. This area’s impressive urban plan combines its industrial heritage with a dynamic approach to urban density, flexible city blocks, and proactive community growth. Amsterdam-based Studioninedots collaborated on the urban plan’s development.
Oostenburg’s’s first residents arrived at the end of 2020; it’s anticipated that the last residents and entrepreneurs will arrive in 2025, completing the new live-work district.

Wasatch Live-Work
The Wasatch Live Work project is located on a gently sloping hillside in a residential neighborhood southeast of downtown Salt Lake City. The project was designed for a family of four who had lived on the property for over twenty years and wanted to reinvest in the fabric of their neighborhood to remain indefinitely. The clients called for an energy efficient home, a place for the family to connect, converse, and refresh; in addition, they wanted a separate work-from-home space. The client’s metal/wood working business required space where sparks from his metal work wouldn’t endanger his woodwork, and a space flooded with natural light for photographing his work.

Riverdale Townhomes
These live-work townhouses are located on a quiet street in Toronto’s rapidly densifying Riverdale neighbourhood. The project was separated into two phases. Phase 1, towards the South end of the block, consists of five deep units each with a mezzanine studio and an interior garden. Phase 2, towards the North end, consists of five shallower units and is serviced by a laneway at the rear.The townhouse blocks are developed on two existing, vacant, industrial properties separated by a residential building inbetween. One unique condition of Phase 1 is its landlocked nature; the site is bound by residential and industrial buildings on three sides. Lampwork Lofts, Oakland
This historically significant 4-story project, built of masonry bearing walls and heavy timber construction, occupies a rectangular 1.5 acre site at 1614 Campbell Street in Oakland, CA. Originally used as an incandescent light factory by General Electric (GE) and designed by the Austin Company, the building construction was completed between 1912 and 1917. The site continued under GE ownership in 1962 when the division closed. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake resulted in the destruction of a north bay of the west wing, not to be rebuilt in the rehabilitation project. The structure is noted for being the first industrial building on the West Coast to employ women.
