Vivienda en el Cabañal

This time, we sneak in a home in El Cabañal, on the top floor of a building from the late seventies which is surrounded by pitched roofs and courtyards. Almost like an intruder, it is erected oblivious to the traditional construction methods of the district. There we find metal beams and pillars supporting slabs made of concrete joists and ceramic vaults. A classic from that era. FdMP architectes transformed this townhouse into a triplex, also renovating its shop on the street front and annexe at the back. Given the plot’s narrowness, it was fundamental to optimise the dwelling’s usable floor areas. By gathering all amenities at the centre of the house, the architects increased the habitat’s relation to the outdoor, with enhanced views on the street and courtyard. They also used the space in the attic to create a double-height and offer generous proportions and increased natural light. We access the dwelling from the courtyard through a narrow... More

CTN

The compact and opaque typology of the buildings of the original house did not take advantage of the landscaping quality offered by the immediate proximity of a public park. To meet the need for expansion, the agency recommended that the house be renovated by occupying the night area, giving it more intimate spaces, and designing a contrasting extension, by means of a very open volume for the day spaces.          The installation of a narrow extension has been designed to occupy all the exterior. This layout generates a clearer reading and identifies spaces, such as the new entrance to the north, or the pool to the south. With reference to the Farnsworth House by Mies Van Der Rohe, the t...
