Few, if any, architects now receive a letter to engage their services. So, it was with surprise and a certain delight that architect Anne Hindley received a letter from these clients in Launceston, a couple reaching retirement, proposing to rework their early 1960s modernist house. The simple mid-century brick home came with a few redeeming features such as a recessed front door (set into an alcove) and generous glazing. The owner posted a brief and a rough sketch, and Hindley & Co agreed to proceed.

Chubby Noodle Restaurant
Chubby Noodle is a restaurant in San Francisco, California serving locally sourced Asian-fusion comfort food. Remodeled from an American style bar and restaurant, this 400 square foot establishment now boasts a rich midcentury modern inspired look. Bronze tones populate the space, from the curved metal bars separating the booths to the bar front clad in bronze wire mesh.
Chosen for its visual density, wire mesh pattern S-16 creates a durable façade across the front of the bar without losing the aged characteristics of the dark wood. Los Angeles Mid-Century Home
Located in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills, this impressive midcentury home is a modern take on Edward Fickett’s original design. Its owners, music executive Caron Veazey and her husband Lou Robinson, purchased the 2000 square foot house expecting minimal renovations. However, further inspection revealed that the structural damage required a more comprehensive reconstruction. “Happy” singer Pharrell Williams, who is managed by Veasey, connected the couple to New York architect Alexander Gorlin to help with the delicate renovation.

TINTA
Enclosed by five-meter ceilings and plate glass windows, the restaurant consists of an airy open plan space with an interior aesthetic drawn from mid-century Milanese cafés, but adapted and modernised to feel contemporary in the early 2020s.
Some of the walls are finished in concrete plaster, while others are hidden behind a long velvet theatrical curtain. The floor is mainly palladiana terrazzo apart from the area adjacent to the brick counter.

Laurelhurst Residence
Originally built in 1951, this mid-century modern home overlooks beautiful Lake Washington in Seattle's Laurelhurst neighbourhood.
Our intent with this extensive renovation was to update the interior to meet the needs of a growing family while still respecting the original mid-century sensibility and the building’s integration with the surrounding natural landscape. The home is situated on the top of a steep hill down to Lake Washington and takes advantage of stunning views of the lake and the Cascade Mountains. The client desired to open and integrate the kitchen with the living room and dining area, creating a communal space that opens to the view.
