Ridge View for Holland America/Princess

This project consists of a three story, 99 room addition to the 460 room McKinley Chalets Resort, a Holland America property located at Denali National Park. Our work began with site selection and master-planning efforts, leading to the role of design architect on the shell scope and full interior design services. The structure is sited to take advantage of Mount Healy views and sits adjacent to a natural grade change, creating the opportunity for a second floor entry via pedestrian bridge. This ensures that guests, many of them elderly, are no more than one level away from their room. Massing of the structure is essentially split in half, with the two halves subtly bent in order to reduce apparent scale. This break creates a ‘conflue... More

Eero Saarinen’s iconic TWA Flight Center repurposed as a 21st-century luxury hotel

Completed in 1962, Eero Saarinen’s iconic TWA Flight Center at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City received much critical acclaim upon its opening and remains today one of the world’s best-known examples of mid-century modern architecture. From its inception, the building operated continuously as a flight center until its closure in 2002 but was later slated for protection in 2005 when it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Subsequently, MCR and MORSE Development won a bid to transform the icon into a 21-st century hotel, which opened its doors in May 2019. LYCS Architects use ‘space corridor’ design matrix to anchor guest experience within site history at Taizhou Linhai Yufengli Boutique Hotel

LYCS Architecture specialize in urban development and interior design anchored within concerns around urban density and responsiveness to unique user and site needs.  When they embarked on the ambitious reconstruction/redevelopment of a 4,000 sq. m site in the ancient town of Linhai in China’s Zhejiang Province into a boutique hotel, they began by addressing the existing site architecture and its associated history(ies). Credit: Wu Qingshan The site housed a century-old pawnshop and courtyard, two sixty-year old brick and concrete industrial houses, and two thirty-year old warehouse structures.  These typologies taken together formed what the designers dubbed a ‘living historical building museum’.  The... Restaurant Zürichberg

According to the motto: “Today begins the future of the past”, by Sorell Hotels Switzerland, we oriented ourselves for the restaurant renovation to the typical architectural features of the Art Nouveau halls above the restaurant and reinterpreted them in a contemporary way. The artful neon installations on the ceiling of the restaurant recall the listed stucco work, while geometrical wall reliefs made of light beige fiberglass concrete reflect the subject of the dark wooden panelling. Chairs with textile surfaces in rich colors provide an exciting contrast to the warm room colors. “The ideas of Karsten Schmidt and his team have conviced us right from the beginning, because they are related to the big renovation in 1995&rd... The spatial implementation based on the reform style and the surroundings has been interpreted in a contemporary way and thus conveys more proximity to the destination. The design strategy is reduction & multifunctionality. The rooms appear light, elegant and personal. The "Swissness" is represented beyond traditional clichés. The design of the hotel is inspired from that spirit – to celebrate life!  The owners of the hotel had a clear vision – to create a landmark for the city; a beacon that reflects the wave of growth of its inhabitants and a place for celebration.
