The client—a Saudi Arabian prince—commissioned YODEZEEN to design a contemporary mosque as part of a larger 12,000 m² private complex in Riyadh. The brief called for a design that respects the sacred spatial principles of Islamic architecture while reflecting YODEZEEN’s modern, sculptural aesthetic. Musholla. It is an Islamic sacred building, called "musholla", which is used for the five daily obligatory prayers and the recitation of the Koran. Musholla can take two forms. Either in the form of a separate room inside the buildings. For example, in public institutions, airports, family houses and the like, or as a separate building. The difference between a mosque and a musholla is in size, with the mosque serving mainly for the large communal congregational prayers held on Fridays. The Narre Warren North Mosque will provide a place of worship and assembly for the local Muslim community set within an expansive valley setting. A site-responsive approach integrates built form with the natural surrounds, while offering new prayer hall mosque, ancillary building, pedestrian walks and car parking. A metamorphic departure in search of contemporary vocabulary, the Salafi Masjid is a soulful realization of tranquillity within the walls. Set amidst a busy regular street in Aluva, the mosque univocally transcends itself as a ‘pause’ and a ‘journey’ to ataraxy. Sprawling across 8.5 cents of land, the mosque embraces the thought-provoking Islamic philosophy from the holy Quran: “He created the skies with the light, without pillars you see it” – throughout the design.
