At the third floor of the family home from the 1950s where the family of architect Francesco Valentini has been living since, this attic was originally divided into rooms as if it were to be made habitable, but was never completed.Before the renovation, the parcelling of the space was strict and the rooms clearly separated, with a load-bearing wall running along the entire floor plan. In order to remedy this division that made the place cramped and unlivable, the architect decided to intervene by knocking down all the walls in the living area and rationalising the sleeping area. The Noordvliet 139 project is about a former wine warehouse in the cozy center of Maassluis in the Netherlands. This large and independent industrial building is located by the characteristic Dutch canals. In fact, it’s original construction dates back to the 1920s, but was completely renovated in 2021 to house both a lovely family and an impressive car collection. Meet historical San Francisco Landmark #104 – the Independent Wood Company building, built in 1907. Situated between Telegraph Hill and the commercial waterfront, this structure has seen a lot of change over 115 years, culminating in a sweeping office renovation by Mithun. This two level brick building is now surrounded by the monumental Levi's Plaza, headquarters of Levi Straus Co. The complex was conceived by Gensler and HOK in 1982 with sensitivity to the 1105 Battery site, continuing the rugged industrial character and predominant red brick. Inspired by the Scandinavian barn vernacular, this Upcountry Maui cottage and barn for Cloth and Goods' Melissa Newirth and Crossing the Threshold's David Johnson provides a peaceful minimalist retreat and respite for family gatherings.  The 1,000 sf. long and low main cottage is sited to capture both mountain and sea vistas while the adjacent barn is designed to hold large family gatherings and act as a seasonal residence.  Caption More

Tucked into the industrial disctrict of Northwest Portland, OR, the Krownlab building exemplifies creative repurposing of a 1930's warehouse.  The board formed concrete structure was originally used for producing braided steel cable for the shipping industry.  Beams and joists were sand-blasted to reveal old growth Douglas Fir, balancing the predominance of concrete and glass.  An open office floor plan was achieved by using fixed and sliding glass panels and half-wall partitions.  Krownlab sliding door hardware was used for entryway, conference room, and private meeting rooms. A MODERN PLACE TO RETIRE  Portland architects Giulietti/Schouten focus on custom, single-family homes—both new builds and remodels—throughout the Pacific Northwest. Their regional expertise drew Mary and Phil Krueger to approach the firm with an ambitious project: replacing their 1938 property in Lincoln City with a modern home. They wanted their home to take advantage of the stunning Oregon Coast views and have design features like wide door frames that would allow them to age in place through retirement and into their golden years. When a Chicago-based painter and a digital designer moved to Kirkland, Washington they bought a home that came with a horse stable. The biggest animal they owned, however, was a dog. They decided to repurpose the horse stable, common for their neighborhood, which abuts the Bridle Trails State Park, as a multiuse space complete with a painter’s studio, a workspace, and a guest bedroom. A young family from Chicago built their dream home in rural Wisconsin.   BACK TO NATURE  Chicago urbanites Dave and Jamie Van Dixhorn and their three young children uprooted from the windy city to the small town of Kohler, Wisconsin, looking for a radical change of lifestyle. Proximity to nature was a central priority. But they also wanted to keep some of that urban sensibility they had come to love: open spaces, large windows and functional design.
