Round Sky and Angular Ground The phrase, “The sky is round and the ground is angular.” is an old-saying found in the Chinese astronomic book, Zhou bi suan jing. Ancient Fareast Asians acknowledged the boundary between the sky and buildings as curves. For that reason, traditional Korean buildings have distinctively curved roof lines. We took a philosophical approach in terms of designing building rather than the curved form itself. A multi-family villa surrounded by a private garden, with three floors and a very wide greenhouse: each floor will be customized on the base of the needs and aesthetics of the future owner. Caption To make it possible to divide the property into three different apartments, new volumes have been created with punctual interventions and in respect of the existing ones, including a new stairwell. The construction site was managed by the architect Cappellini, with which the external aesthetic interventions were defined. The main purpose of the intervention was to maintain the existing building, providing it with the necessary elements to give it new habitability. João Morgado To achieve all the goals of the intervention, it was proposed to do a full renovation, where demolitions of degraded elements were carried out throughout the interior, and distinctive building elements were recovered/replaced.
